"The Voice" undergoes format shakeup for season 3

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "The Voice" is going through changes - but unlike other singing competitions, they have nothing to do with departing judges.

The NBC hit has added a couple of tweaks for its upcoming third season, executive producer Mark Burnett told reporters during a press gathering at his home Sunday.

Chief among the changes is something called "the steal," which will allow coaches to swipe a contestant from another coach, after that coach has decided to drop the contestant from their team.

"Obviously, Season 3 has been an evolution," said Burnett, who was joined by "Voice" coaches Adam Levin, Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton, along with host Carson Daly. "This year there's much more at stake. When they have their battles and select one person to stay with them and one person to leave, the other coach can buzz in and steal that person that the coach has sent home."

Daly said the new approach will compel viewers to pay attention to the season overall, rather than just their particular favorite singers.

"It's like fantasy football," Daly offered. "You become incentivized now to watch the league as opposed to your own team. And that's what we wanted to bring to our coaches, where you don't just look at your own team; you have to pay attention to the league. And the league is the other three coaches."

Also new to the upcoming season: A "knockout round," which will winnow teams down from 10 to five participants prior to going into the live shows.

The third season of "The Voice" premieres September 10. The upcoming season will feature Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong as a mentor.

Northern 'liberated' Syrian city lives in post-Assad mode

Residents of the northern Syrian city of Aazaz, "liberated" by the rebels three weeks ago, are already living a post Bashar al-Assad reality with a military and a political council running daily life.

"When the fighting ended, there was nothing. No water, no electricity, nothing to eat," Samir Hajj Omar, head of a new political council in Aazaz which is striving to organise for a post-Assad rule.

"Today, we have restored about 80 percent of services," he boasted.

It has only been three weeks since the northern city, located near the Turkish border, was taken by the rebels following five months of fierce fighting with forces of President Bashar al-Assad.

Since then, residents have set up a political and military council to handle daily affairs.

Life is slowly returning to Aazaz, a city of 70,000 inhabitants around 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Aleppo where the army is pressing a ground offensive it launched on Wednesday to recapture areas seized by rebels since July 20.

Two thirds of the population, many of whom had taken refugee in neighbouring Turkey, have returned to Aazaz and the souk has reopened for business.

And in tribute to those killed in the fighting, one of the main city landmarks has been renamed "Martyrs Square."

"We are free and happy," says Abu Musa, a merchant.

"All we want is for Bashar to go," he added in reference to the president whose forces have been putting down an uprising against the regime since it first erupted 17 months ago.

On the surface, Aazaz is like any Middle Eastern city during Ramadan, the holy Muslim fasting month: idle during the day and lively after sundown when families get together to break the dawn-to-dusk fast with an Iftar meal.

At night, the streets are bustling with shoppers and cars are stuck in traffic.

The only difference in Aazaz is that children play on damaged tanks left behind by the army who was driven out by the armed rebels, and amuse themselves as they try to swivel around the gun.

But life is not all that rosy yet for Aazaz.

Although there are no apparent shortages of food, gasoline prices have quadrupled from 50 Syrian pounds ($0.75) before the war to 200 pounds ($3) today.

At the hospital, supplies of antibiotics, gauze and children's medicine have been depleted because of the fighting and the medical team has been decimated, with only a doctor and three staff remaining from the former 25-strong team.

The physician, Anas el-Araki, puts up a brave face as dozens of women and children queue up, awaiting their turn to be examined.

"I have to call on the wealthy to try and get money and medicine. We depend entirely on donations. We are in the hands of God," he says with frustration.

He also criticises the main opposition Syrian National Council.

"The Syrian National Council does not help us. They only make promises."

-- 'We are very scared' --

--------------------------

With battles raging in many neighbouring areas, the city has also been providing haven to Syrians displaced by fighting and now hosts some 1,000 refugees mostly from Aleppo in schools or with residents.

Twenty-year-old Majda fled her home in the embattled Aleppo district of Salaheddin three days ago, escaping the shelling and snipers with her three children and siblings. But even in Aazaz she cannot rest easy.

"Yesterday, we heard fighting and three rockets fell. There is no safe place left in Syria," said the young woman from beneath her pink and black veil.

"We are very scared."

And while fighting has ceased in Aazaz, the army is never far away.

Just five kilometres from the city, the military airport at Minakh is still under government control.

Almost all of the rebel fighters from Aazaz have left to fight in the crucial battle for Aleppo, leaving no one to protect the city of 70,000 inhabitants.

"Sometimes you just want to die. In any case, right now we are slowly dying," said Majda, who lives crammed with a dozen relatives in a small room.

The young woman, who did not give her surname, said that although she is afraid she does not want to cross the border into Turkey and become a refugee like many other Syrians have done.

In February, government forces stormed Aazaz but the rebel Free Syrian Army seized control of the city at the end of July after five months of fierce fighting.

VH1 pulls series involving ex-Dolphin Chad Johnson

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) ? For Chad Johnson, a weekend confrontation with his wife has led to repercussions beyond a misdemeanor charge and NFL unemployment.

VH1 pulled the series "Ev and Ocho" from its schedule, citing "the seriousness of the allegations" against Johnson. The network said Monday it had no plans to air the show.

The Dolphins terminated Johnson's contract Sunday night, about 24 hours after he was arrested in a domestic battery case involving his wife, Evelyn Lozada, who is on the reality TV show "Basketball Wives."

Coach Joe Philbin says the decision to release the six-time Pro Bowl receiver wasn't based on any single incident and wasn't made to send a message. Instead, Philbin decided Johnson and the Dolphins were simply a bad fit.

The gaming retail chain, GameStop, seems to have taken a hit over the past year as many users move game downloads to mobile devices and online platforms. Although the retailer continues to maintain a two-thirds share of the retail market, the company?s stock seems to have taken a 26% dive, leaving the company in need of a serious turn-around. It should be noted that last September, GameStop began to take in trade-ins of Apple devices and it has been discovered that Apple products have been part of the company?s master plan to make a comeback. According to the San Francisco Chronicle:

Does Mobile Marketing Help Real Estate Salespeople? ? Text ...

The only answer is yes! Any realtor today, who is not using mobile marketing to reach customers, be they buyers or sellers, is missing out on significant earnings. Smartphone technology is here and it plays a role of instant gratification for those searching for a home to buy or a realtor to sell their home.

Imagine these two scenarios and decide which realtor you would choose.

Realtor Number One

Has years of experience, knows the marketplace, advertises your home in newspapers and flyers.

Realtor Number Two

Has years of experience, knows the marketplace, advertises your home in newspapers and flyers, and also uses the power of mobile marketing to give potential buyers driving past your home the ability to immediately get information sent to their smartphone while they?re sitting outside your house for sale.

So, which realtor would you choose to sell your home? Of course the answer is number two, because that realtor is catering to a market that wants instant information. With potential buyers sitting outside a home, you as a realtor can send them instant information on the home, videos of the interior, maps of schools and other institutions in the area, and just about anything else you can think of. The potential buyer texts a KEYWORD that?s on your ?For Sale? sign and they are immediately sent all the information that you loaded into your back office program. Not only that, your back office captures their smartphone number, thereby allowing you to follow-up with the potential buyer as soon as you have the time.

Looking at this from a realtor?s point of view; you have the possibility of three sales when this happens.

  • The listing commission part of the sale,
  • the buyer commission part of the sale, and
  • the potential to list the new buyer?s home.

In today?s real estate market, opportunities like what?s described above are not something you can afford to miss out on. In fact, one sale from a smartphone can compensate you for your back office fees for a few years.

Your customers will be in awe of this technology and it doesn?t take them long to realize that your services go above and beyond others in the industry. You?ll find it easier to close a buyer, easier to sell a home and you?ll get more referrals from happy customers than ever before.

Once a potential buyer receives your information you can also direct them to the mobile part of your website where they can view any number of other homes you have listed. They can then watch virtual house tours until they find the home they want.

When someone uses a smartphone to get information on a home, they spend approximately sixteen minutes viewing the information. And, they also keep that information on their smartphone for further use. Most messages sent to smartphones are kept for twelve days.

Realtors are also using smartphones as a way of keeping in touch with loyal customers who have purchased or sold a home through them. Smartphones offer realtors a way to touch base with people even if they?re not buying or selling their home right now. Community updates, real estate market statistics and a host of other topics can all lead to loyal customers who will be happy to refer people to you.

In today?s fast paced world, realtors cannot afford to miss out on this technology and all it offers them. If there is one thing all realtors want it?s more commissions, and smartphone technology will help them get there.

Olympic Viewing: Men's basketball finale

You'll be happy to know this, Magic, Michael and Larry. Doug Collins is on your side.

Collins, finishing up his fourth year as NBC's Olympic basketball analyst, said he believes the U.S. Dream Team from the 1992 Barcelona Games would beat the current United States team in a hypothetical matchup. The 1992 team's front line is too imposing, he said.

The more important matter at hand for the U.S. team is Sunday's gold-medal game against Spain. Spain has a solid front line, too, but will succeed or fail on the strength of its guard play, Collins said.

The Americans are "close to where they want to be, but all of the pressure is on them to win the gold medal," he said. "Otherwise, it's going to be a failure for them. They know that. It's gold or bust for them."

Collins is happy for a day off between games because his day job keeps him pretty busy. The current Philadelphia 76ers head coach has watched from London as the 76ers participated in a four-team megadeal that landed Andrew Bynum from the L.A. Lakers while sending Andre Iguodala to Denver.

Michael Jordan once said that participating on the Dream Team helped him learn some weaknesses of his All-Star teammates, things that he could exploit in later games. Collins said he knows the current players pretty well. The advantage to his analyst's job comes in getting to know some of the international players, and evaluate whether they could play in the NBA.

Being a current coach also brings him fresh material for his analyst's role.

"A big part of the Olympics is being able to story tell and to make it personal," he said, "so you know these guys by more than just their numbers."

The strength of the U.S. team this year is its versatility, with so many players able to operate all over the court. The team has proven to be explosive offensively when the 3-point shots are falling. Collins said he always believed the team's supposed weakness in the front court was overstated since the U.S. has steadily outrebounded foes.

London is also providing some family time for Collins, whose son Chris is an assistant with the U.S. team and helps scout opponents and run practice drills.

"This is not only a professional situation for me, but I have a lot of personal ties that make it very rewarding," Collins said.

WALKING TALL: One of the joys of the Olympics ? and of NBC Sports' daytime coverage ? is getting absorbed in an exotic sport you would have no other reason to watch. Saturday's unexpected pleasure was the women's 20-kilometer race walk, and seeing if Russian Olga Kaniskina could keep a big lead against younger countrywoman Elena Lashmanova

She couldn't, and her small body was filled with mental and physical pain at the end.

UNHAPPY SILVER: Tough to remember a group of people looking so miserable receiving flowers as Brazil's silver-medal soccer team, following the surprising loss to Mexico. The players made American gymnast McKayla Maroney look happy.

PHELPS ON LINKS: What's next after the pool for Michael Phelps? Improving his golf game. Golf Channel said Phelps has signed on as the next star of "The Haney Project," the series that depicts Tiger Woods' former swing coach trying to improve the game of a celebrity guest. Now retired from swimming, Phelps said he's looking for things to keep him motivated. "We look forward to chronicling Michael's transition from the most-decorated Olympian in history to a frustrated golfer trying to enjoy playing the world's greatest golf courses," said Mike McCarley, network president. "Golfers everywhere will be able to relate to his quest to improve his game."

RATINGS: Due to processing issues, the Nielsen company said no viewership estimate was available for NBC's Friday telecast.

UPCOMING: Sunday's music-filled closing ceremony is expected to make a rousing finish for the games.

Canadian auto production up more than expected ? Wheels Talk

Michael Hatch, CADA

By Michael Hatch,
Special to Wheelstalk.com -

So far in 2012, the Canadian retail auto sector has been treated to solid double-digit sales growth as supply lines recovered from the 2011 tsunami and as previously penny-pinching consumers reacquainted themselves with the habit of opening their wallets. The combination of a number of positive factors has seen total sales increase this year by a degree most (me included) had not predicted even six months ago.

As the sales have jumped, so has production. It bears reminding that for every car that is sold off a dealer?s lot, one must be cranked off the manufacturer?s line.

In the first half of 2012, total Canadian automotive production was up a very impressive 18.9 per cent over the same period in 2011.

Destined as they are (for the most part, anyway) for American dealers and consumers, Canadian-produced cars and the increase we?ve seen in them so far this year represent more of the U.S. recovery than what?s taking place north of the border.

Having lost 40 per cent of their retail market in the carnage of 2008 and 2009, the boost in demand now taking place in the United States is outpacing even the very solid sales growth we?ve seen so far in Canada this year. The farther they fall, the higher they bounce.

However despite the context of the continental market in which the auto sector operates in North America, Canadian sales and production increases in 2012 are two sides of the same coin.

As in America, Canadian consumers are responding to record-high affordability and competition in the marketplace. The very forces that give dealers and their manufacturing partners ulcers allow consumers to take advantage of the best deals the market has seen in a generation or more.

The huge jump in production ? and the job gains that go with it ? that has occurred in Canada so far in 2012 may reflect mostly American demand. But it also demonstrates forces that are bringing the Canadian retail market back to health.

Most people know that participating in nearly any kind of physical activity is healthier than not exercising at all. Doctors agree, and now the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed, with its recent decision concerning the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Regardless of your political leanings and your personal feelings about the ACA, research shows that exercise can keep people from getting sick, and it can rehabilitate people who are already sick or injured.

This recent article on the ACA features experts from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), who believe that exercise is ?the most powerful tool? for fighting illness in the U.S. Furthermore, according to doctors, ??physical inactivity will have caused about 7 million premature deaths in the country just in this decade.? Still need more exercise motivation?

The standard economic and public health arguments assert that treatment costs more than prevention in the long run, and that you can do your part now to improve your health and fitness, preventing more than 40 potentially life threatening diseases and chronic conditions. This can be accomplished by exercising regularly, as part of a healthier overall lifestyle.

Studies have demonstrated the ability of exercise to treat conditions ranging from diabetes to mental illness. Exercise is, practically speaking, the best proven preventative medicine, as well as an ?economic necessity.? According to the same article:

??[L]ocal and national governments around the world are starting to become aware that there is an enormous impact on the bottom line if people are kept healthy. Between $233 and $381 billion are spent dealing with preventable diseases which would not now be affecting people if they were physically active.?

The economic impact is not limited to just the costs directly related to health care; it encompasses other problems such as lost worker productivity, which indirectly affects the economy.

The good news is that exercising doesn?t have to cost you very much. Walking, playing outside, and working out at home are just a few inexpensive ways to stay in shape. And, with a great fitness app, exercise can be fun too. Get started today!

Improve Your Nutrition With These Great Tips | ArticlePDQ.com

While overhauling your diet may seem intimidating at first, learning about proper nutrition makes the process much easier. Thanks to this article, you now have additional knowledge about nutrition. Also make sure to take the necessary steps to plan out your diet, and you will become healthier over time.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are best when they are purchased in season. They usually taste better and are less expensive at this time. This also gives you an opportunity to support your local growers, or to try your hand at growing your own fruits and vegetables. Frozen is a good substitute for fresh. Nutrients are preserved by freezing vegetables right after they are picked. Canned vegetables, in comparison, have higher salt content than frozen ones, and typically trail on taste.

It?s important to know about nutrition and how to keep your body healthy. Once you know the basics you can build a personal diet. You should always consider what your body really needs when planning meals.

Skip fatty and sugary condiments, and replace them with healthier options. Opt for condiments with fewer calories and less fat. Salsa adds great flavor to a baked potato. Likewise, mustard is a healthier alternative to mayo. Eating healthy doesn?t have to mean you give up taste; you just choose alternatives that add a different flavor.

Vitamin B is an essential part of a healthy diet. If you don?t find that you eat enough foods that are rich in B vitamins, then you should take a vitamin supplement. B vitamins are necessary for your body, but you should avoid overdoing it. You should consume plenty of B vitamins.

If you are serious about focusing on health and nutrition, stay away from low-carb diets. Carbs give your body the essential fiber and nutrients that it requires to stay healthy. It is not bad to eat carbohydrates in moderation. Carbs keep you full, and help you avoid eating all the time.

It is best to prepare nutritious food for your child to carry for lunch. By packing cold lunches, you can be assured that your child is getting a healthy lunch. While school lunches provide a meal, you do not know what, where, or how it is prepared. Retain control over the nutritional value of a meal by packing it yourself. Cafeteria lunches from school make it more difficult to control kids? nutritional intake.

When it comes to kids, limit the amount of sugar they consume each day. Diabetes is on the rise in developed nations, which is most likely the result of eating foods that are full of refined sugars. Even busy parents can build a good diet for their kids.

Educating yourself about how to get the proper nutrition is crucial to giving your body the diet it needs. With the knowledge you gained from this article you should be more aware of certain foods that can give you the most nutritional value.
