Delphi church fights highway project

DELPHI, Ind. (AP) - The leaders of a north-central Indiana church slated to be razed for a highway project have rejected the state's offer for their land, saying it's not enough for their sanctuary to be rebuilt elsewhere.

The Journal and Courier of Lafayette reports the state Department of Transportation has offered Delphi Pentecostal Church officials $535,000 for their church and 13.3 acres of land.

But pastor Tim Stewart says appraisers estimate it will cost the church between $2.1 million and $2.5 million to replace the church north of Delphi on Indiana 25 that's in the path of a 36-mile section of the Hoosier Heartland Highway.

The church is suing the state in Carroll County for fair compensation. Court-appointed appraisers will report their findings Friday to a judge.

Private hiring soars; seasonal issues cloud gain (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The jobs recovery gathered pace as a measure of private-sector hiring surged in December and claims for unemployment benefits fell, suggesting the battered labor market may continue to strengthen in 2012.

The ADP National Employment Report's December job tally of 325,000 surprised economists who had expected a gain of roughly half that size. It was also above the 204,000 private jobs added in November.

Many economists struck a note of caution, though, saying the number may have been distorted by seasonal factors

Joel Prakken, of Macroeconomic Advisers, which helps produce the survey, told reporters job readings tend to be inflated at year-end as employers keep workers on payrolls for accounting reasons, and the reading could be revised lower.

"Certainly we're getting some more encouraging news on the jobs market, but we have to be very aware that it does reflect a very volatile period of the year -- the holiday season and the days following the new year," said Bernard Baumohl, chief global economist at Economic Outlook Group in Princeton, New Jersey.

Markets did indeed appear to take the data with a grain of salt. U.S. stock indexes were lower while safe-haven U.S. government bond prices edged up, keeping the benchmark 10-year yield below 2 percent.

In December 2010, a surge in private sector hiring far exceeded the total monthly job gain reported by the government.

The more comprehensive government payrolls monthly report, due Friday, is expected to show the economy added 150,000 public and private sector jobs in December, according to a Reuters survey conducted earlier this week.

FIRST-TIME JOBLESS CLAIMS DIP

Even so, data on Thursday confirmed some encouraging trends.

The Labor Department reported the number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits fell by 15,000 last week, the fourth decline in the last five weeks.

The four-week moving average, considered a better measure of trends, fell to its lowest level since June 2008.

"The message from the four-week averages is that the labor market is maintaining its recent improvement," said Gennadiy Goldberg, interest rate strategist at 4-Cast, Inc in New York.

There were also signs of improvement in hiring within the vast U.S. services sector.

The employment component of the Institute for Supply Management's services index rose to 49.4 from 48.9 in November, though "that wasn't as strong as the ADP report....so there are a few mixed messages on employment," said Julia Coronado, chief economist for North America at BNP Paribas in New York.

A private industry survey showed the number of planned layoffs at U.S. firms fell to a five-month low in November.

But John Challenger, chief executive officer of consultants Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said the two sectors that suffered the most job cuts in 2011 -- government and financial services -- look destined to struggle again this year.

RISKS REMAIN FOR ECONOMY IN 2012

The unemployment rate is expected to have edged up to 8.7 percent last month, from 8.6 percent in November, as some Americans who had given up their search for work were lured back into the market, according to a Reuters survey.

While recent data suggests the U.S. economy expanded more swiftly in the final three months of 2011 after growing at a 1.8 percent pace between July and September, few economists expect that pace to persist through 2012. Most have penciled in a gradual growth rate of around 2 percent for the year.

That may prove too optimistic if Europe falls into a deep recession as countries there slash spending to battle a debt crisis or if Chinese growth continues to slow.

Baumohl said a significant downturn in Europe could threaten U.S. exports and U.S. banks while shaving up to one percentage point off 2012 growth.

"The market believes the numbers do not yet reflect the impact of much lower growth in Europe and the slowdown in Asia," said Cary Leahey, senior economist at Decision Economics. "The problem is the market doesn't really believe the positive trend will last."

The Federal Reserve, which will hold its first policy meeting of 2012 later this month, has pledged to hold interest rates at zero until at least mid-2013.

And a survey of Wall Street firms that deal with the Fed showed primary dealers saw a 45 percent chance the central bank will wait until mid-2014 before it raises rates.

Ian Shepherdson, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics, said persistent improvement in the labor market may complicate things.

"The big danger now is that the rate of improvement in labor market conditions will be much faster than the Fed expects, forcing (it) to re-evaluate medium-term inflation risks this year rather than in 2013," he wrote in a note to clients.

Apple gearing up for 'media-related announcement' later this month?

Leave it to Apple to completely avoid CES, yet be one of the largest stories surrounding its dates. Much like last year's invite to what would eventually be the introduction of Verizon's iPhone 4, All Things D has it on good authority that the folks in Cupertino are spending their first hours back on the job planning a "media-related announcement" for later this month. Contrary to earlier beliefs, we're told that this particular event won't be related to the next-gen iPad, and it's also "unlikely" to be connected to a "large-scale rethinking of its interactive television initiative."

So, knowing what it won't entail... what will be talked about? According to unnamed sources, Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue is reportedly involved. For those unaware, Cue is responsible for a sizable chunk of Apple's media units, not the least of which include the App Store, iBookstore, iTunes Store and iCloud. Sadly, details outside of that are few and far betwixt, but you can bet we'll be keeping an ear to the ground for more -- even if it's smack-dab in the middle of a Sony CES keynote. Cough.

Update: TechCrunch is reporting that it'll focus on the publishing sector, with no new hardware whatsoever on tap.

Versus becomes NBC Sports Network

Good. Now all they need to do is just hire some better on-air talent for NHL broadcasts, and they'll be set (because having to sit through Eddie Olczyk's blatant, one-sided homerism he labels as "commentary" is kind of what I imagine television in hell is like).

...but seriously, this is in incredibly welcome change. It's about time this network had a degree of professionalism about it; Versus always felt so second tier. Having a brand like NBC behind them can only do a world of good, at this point.

Arrow shot kills 8-year-old Australian girl (AP)

SYDNEY ? Australian police say an 8-year-old girl has died from being accidentally shot in the head with an arrow.

A New South Wales state police spokesman says the girl was shot on Dec. 26 near the small town of Manilla in the state's north. She was airlifted to a hospital in Sydney for emergency surgery but died on Friday. They did not release her name.

Police would not release any details on how the girl was shot but said it was accidental rather than suspicious. Officials do not expect to make any arrests.

Diplo To Release Free EP 'Express Yourself,' Offers Sampler In The Meantime (AUDIO)

DJ/producer extraordinaire Diplo announced Tuesday that he'll be giving away a free EP titled Express Yourself "inna few days." Does this mean we'll have it in time to ring in the New Year? A "few" days doesn't tell us much, but we can't help but suspect (hope) he timed its release to NYE, so stay tuned for updates. Until then, Diplo has been so gracious as to give us a sampler of what's to come, along with some provocative downloadable artwork to go with it. The mix is in the style of "moombahton," a word that gets more confusing when you break it down -- it's the portmanteau of "Moombah" and "reggaeton."

Studies suggest Avastin can help ovarian cancer patients ? - CNN ...

Two studies released?in this week's?New England Journal of Medicine?suggest the drug Avastin may benefit some ovarian cancer patients.

The two studies found that adding Avastin to chemotherapy treatment can stall the growth of cancer by almost four months. Avastin, which has the generic name Bevacizumab, stops the growth of blood vessels that feed cancerous tumors, say researchers. However, it is still unclear if it will extend patients' lives.

Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer for American women. According to the National Cancer Institute, 15,000 women in the United States die from it each year. It is frequently undetected until it has advanced to a late stage, making it the most fatal of all gynecological cancers.

While Avastin has been approved by the FDA for some cancers, including kidney, brain, and colon cancer, it has come under fire for its use in breast cancer treatment. It was initially approved for breast cancer treatment in 2006.?But late last month, the FDA revoked Avastin?s approval for breast cancer because they felt the benefits did not outweigh the side effects. Avastin is produced by Genentech, a subdivision of Roche Pharmaceuticals.

The two studies were funded by Roche.

One study was led by the Gynecological Oncology Group and surveyed 1,873 women internationally who had been newly diagnosed with stage III or IV cancer. Women who received the drug as part of their chemotherapy regimen were found to increase their rate of progression-free survival, or the length of time before the cancer worsened, to 14 months. It was a four-month increase over patients who were just given the placebo and had a progression-free survival period of 10 months.

Dr. Robert Burger of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia was the lead author of the study. ?This is a new paradigm in the treatment of this disease,? says?Burger. He says that patients with Stage III or IV ovarian cancer ?deserve to have this treatment as an option.?

The other study, led by the International Collaboration on Ovarian Neoplasms, looked at more than 1,500 women internationally. This study included women with less severe stages of cancer. Authors found women with the placebo had a 22-month progression-free survival period, versus 24 months for those on Avastin, for a two-month difference before the cancer worsened. However, when looking just at patients with stage III or IV cancer, the progression-free survival period for those on Avastin increased by over three months.

While Avastin can delay the growth of cancers, researchers were unable to definitively say how it impacts survival rates for patients. They say that it will still take a few more years of tracking before they can fully determine that. Full survival data is not expected until at least next year.

In addition, patients who did take Avastin in both studies did experience some side effects, including increased hypertension and tearing of the gastrointential wall. However, according to both studies, quality of life was not impacted by the side effects.

?I think this data is compelling. Improved control of disease is always a good endpoint, but living longer is a better endpoint,??says Dr. Joanne Mortimer, who sat on the FDA advisory committee looking at Avastin for the treatment of breast cancer.?Mortimer, who is not connected to?the studies,?is a bit cautious. ?Without increased survival rates, are the side effects worth it??

Last week, the European Commission approved the use of Avastin in the treatment of ovarian cancer patients. However, Genentech says that based on the current findings of the studies, they will not?ask?the FDA to consider?it?for ovarian cancer treatment in the United States. They are still waiting for full survival data.
