Dernbach stars as England beat South Africa

Aug 31 2012 - 21:51:57

Jade Dernbach marked his return to England duty with three wickets, including the prize scalp of Hashim Amla, in a four-wicket win over his native South Africa in the third one-day international at The Oval.

Dernbach, recalled in place of Tim Bresnan, took three for 44 in nine overs on his Surrey home ground Friday as South Africa were dismissed for a below par 211 with 20 balls of their innings left.

Fellow seamer James Anderson took four for 44 in 9.4 overs, including a spell of three for one in eight balls that polished off the tail, to help set up a win -- England's first over the Proteas this season in any format -- that levelled the five-match series at 1-1.

England slumped to 64 for three in reply before a fourth-wicket partnership of 108 between former South Africa youth international Jonathan Trott (71) and ex-Ireland left-hander Eoin Morgan (73) punished the tourists for not making enough runs after winning the toss.

"A lot of character was shown there," said England captain Alastair Cook.

"It was a really good bowling performance...Jade came in, we wanted a wicket-taker, and he took wickets for us."

He added: "You wouldn't want to chase too many more on that wicket. Eoin and Jonathan played two very good innings."

South Africa captain AB de Villiers said his top order had let the side down. "It wasn't a 210 wicket. The top order didn't take responsibility and we came up short. Most of our senior players got in and didn't make it count, including me -- I played a very poor shot."

Morgan, in the ongoing absence of Kevin Pietersen -- still in England exile after sending "provocative" texts to South Afruca players allegedly critical of his own team-mates, including former Test captain Andrew Strauss, who retired on Wednesday -- entertained a capacity crowd with some typically bold strokeplay.

"I do feel responsibility in the middle order, but I enjoy that and I hope I can continue to help us win games," said Morgan, named man-of-the-match.

South Africa made a steady start after winning the toss, with Amla and Graeme Smith sharing an opening partnership of 50.

But Smith was bowled by Anderson for 18 after the left-hander charged down the pitch.

Last month at The Oval, Amla became the first South Africa batsman to make a Test triple hundred and on Tuesday he struck 150 as the Proteas won the second one-dayer in Southampton by 80 runs to go 1-0 up following last week's washout in Cardiff.

But on Friday, Dernbach dismissed Amla for just 43 when a full length delivery nipped back and bowled him off the inside edge.

James Tredwell, replacing rested fellow off-spinner Graeme Swann, took two for 49 as both de Villiers and JP Duminy holed out when well set.

Dernbach, born in Johannesburg but who arrived in England as a schoolboy, deceived Dean Elgar (42) with a clever slower ball before hed had Wayne Parnell caught behind by Craig Kieswetter, a former South Africa Under-19 international.

In reply, Ian Bell was lbw to fast bowler Dale Steyn before Cook, now also the Test captain, carelessly holed out off spinner Robin Peterson on 20.

And 61 for two became 64 for three when Ravi Bopara was caught behind for a duck by wicket-keeper de Villiers off paceman Morne Morkel.

Trott took 86 balls over his fifty, with just two fours, but prevented further collapse.

Meanwhile Morgan, who lofted left-arm spinner Elgar for the first six of the match during a 54-ball fifty, ensured the innings did not stagnate.

Morgan, known as as one-day 'finisher', later cover-drove Lonwabo Tsotsobe for a six high over long-off before he skyed a return catch to Peterson.

Trott was out with five needed for victory when caught behind off left-arm quick Parnell before England won with two overs to spare.

The series continues across London at Lord's on Sunday.

Screening for chronic hepatitis C in baby boomers - The Doctor ...

Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finalized new recommendations for one-time screening for the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in all persons born between 1945 and 1965, a generation better known as the ?Baby Boomers.? The CDC?s?new recommendations?were published in the?Annals of Internal Medicine.?Previously, the CDC only recommended that persons with behavioral or medical risk factors for HCV be routinely tested.?Its rationale for expanded screening in persons age 47 to 67 is that more than 75% of persons with antibodies to HCV (demonstrating evidence of prior infection) belong to this age group, ?due to a higher prevalence of injection drug use. Since more than half of adults with HCV are unaware that they are infected, the CDC recently estimated that routine screening and treatment of infected persons in this ?birth cohort??would be cost-effective.It?is unclear what impact these new recommendations will have on primary care, given that the American Academy of Family Physicians continues to follow the?U.S. Preventive Services Task Force?s 2004 guideline, which states?that there is insufficient evidence to screen persons at high risk of HCV infection, and recommends against screening adults in the general population. The CDC?s and USPSTF?s contrasting views previously provoked a lively debate in the editorial pages of?American Family Physician, with?the USPSTF arguing?that screening had not been shown to reduce morbidity or mortality from HCV, and?the CDC countering?that disease-oriented benefits should eventually translate into positive long-term health outcomes for patients. In fact, the?new guideline?makes it a point to explain why the two organizations may continue to differ in their recommendations:The USPSTF prefers data from randomized, controlled trials that begin with randomization into screened and nonscreened groups and follow participants through to morbidity and mortality, yet these data are not available. Although these types of studies provide the most conclusive evidence about the benefits and harms of a screening intervention, they also are resource-intensive and require long periods of follow-up. The CDC based its HCV testing recommendations on the prevalence in the target population, the many persons who are unaware of their infection status, potential benefits of care and treatment, and projections of increasing morbidity and mortality in the absence of an intervention. Two years ago, I represented the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality at several of the Department of Health and Human Services? strategy sessions that followed the?Institute of Medicine?s report?calling for?increased efforts to?reduce the public health burden of chronic hepatitis and liver cancer in the U.S. Chronic hepatitis predominantly affects?vulnerable populations, including immigrants from Asia and homeless and incarcerated persons.?But I am?not sure that the new CDC guideline represents?a step in the right direction. On one hand,?recently developed?drugs for chronic hepatitis C are considerably less toxic than the older ones, and more effective, if effectiveness is measured by disease-oriented outcomes such as viral loads and liver pathology. On the other, a large proportion of persons with hepatitis C?will never develop symptoms, but this universal age-cohort screening strategy would expose them all?to potentially unnecessary labeling, workup, and treatment, not to mention add?hundreds of thousands of patients to health systems for the underserved that are already?straining to meet demand for?subspecialist services.?It?s a tough call to make, and I will be watching the USPSTF?closely to see how they weigh the benefits and harms.

Bing Integrates Facebook Photo Search

  • August 30, 2012 03:52pm EST
Bing Friends

Bing is turning its search engine into a one-stop-shop for your every social need, announcing on Thursday the integration of Facebook friends' photos into your results.

The Microsoft-owned search engine now lets users quickly find any particular picture they're looking for?be it a photo from last summer's family reunion, or a snapshot of the sun setting behind a favorite city skyscraper.

If you don't have a specific image in mind, the new Friends' Photos feature also allows users to simply browse through Facebook friends' collections.

Bing's social sidebar, launched in May, already showcases friends who have posted photos relating to queries. Based on photo title, album description, or caption, this feature theoretically makes it easier to know who to pump for information about an upcoming vacation or the best restaurant to stop at on road trip. And that's not all it's good for for, according to the Bing team.

"With today's release, we are taking this a step further and letting you search and browse your Facebook friends' photos right in Bing," Social Team senior program manager Ian Lin wrote in a blog entry.

By clicking on a photo in the Bing sidebar, users are redirected to a new page where more images are displayed. From there, they can also search for additional pictures, or browse friends' latest shots.

Lin promised that Bing respects all of Facebook's privacy settings, allowing only acknowledged friends to see the photos that you have made viewable, and vice versa. Your photos will never be shared with the public, according to the company.

The social sidebar made its debut just before Microsoft introduced a major revamp of Bing. Last month, the company added the ability for users to tag a friend in a query in a now familiar attempt by search and social firms to extract added information about people using such services.

Rare sand cat kittens born at Israel zoo; will help repopulate species

A rare sand cat in Israel is certainly doing her part to repopulate her species. Rotem, a female sand cat who arrived two years ago at the Zoological Center of Tel Aviv from Germany, recently gave birth to four kittens.

One of four sand cat kittens born recently at a zoo in Israel emerges from its den. Credit: Moshe Blunk
Sand cats, which are native to Asia and Africa, became extinct in Israel after the territorial exchange between Israel and Jordan in the mid-1990s. Habitat destruction caused by the expansion of human settlement was a primary cause of the demise.

Sand cats are listed as near-threatened throughout the remainder of their range.

Rotem was paired with a male sand cat from Poland, named Sela, and zoo animal experts were pleasantly surprised when they discovered the size of the litter.

"In the beginning of August, we were very happy to find two tiny kittens in the depth of the den with Rotem," Sagit Horowitz, a spokeswoman for the zoo, told the Mother Nature Network. "On the next day the keepers already saw three and on the next one they were surprised to find a fourth one."

There was concern that four would be too many for Rotem to handle (a typical sand cat litter size is three), but Horowitz said all four kittens have begun to leave their den and have become stars of their exhibit.

Like their mother, the kittens will play a role in repopulating the species. They'll eventually be sent to other zoos as part of a cooperative effort.

In the wild, sand cats prey mostly at night on small rodents, birds, and reptiles. Their paws have thick pads to help them deal with hot sand, and their large ears enable them to more easily release body heat.

According to the Jerusalem Zoo human settlement within their habitat resulted in an increase in feral cats and dogs, along with foxes, crows, and venomous snakes, which either preyed on young sand cats or competed with them for food.

The Jerusalem Zoo has been involved in attempts at re-introducing sand cats into the wild, and in programs to protect sand-dune habitat and raise awareness about the importance of habitat protection.

Romney homestretch game plan: jobs, jobs, jobs

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? His convention behind him, Mitt Romney enters the campaign homestretch with a singular goal: convince Americans disappointed with President Barack Obama that the Democrat is to blame for the stagnant economy and that only he can fix it.

"You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had, was the day you voted for him," Romney said, accepting the Republican nomination that eluded him four years ago.

It was the start of a closing argument that aides say will be singularly focused on jobs ? the issue on the top of voters' minds ? between now and Nov. 6, as the GOP challenger looks to woo voters who put their faith into Obama four years ago but have soured on him with unemployment stuck at 8.3 percent and the economy sputtering.

Polls show a close race nationally and in key states, ensuring that the hard-hitting, personal attack-filled campaign of the summer will continue this fall, if not escalate.

Romney's challenges are great. Most voters say they like Obama better than Romney, who struggles to connect with voters. Most also think the president will win a second term.

Romney has fewer paths than Obama as he looks to cobble together victories in enough states to win the 270 electoral votes needed to become president. And his image has been dented after a barrage of negative ads by Obama and his allies that cast the Republican as a heartless job-killing corporate titan.

Still, Romney has a slight edge in surveys over Obama on the question of who would better handle the economy. Between his campaign and allied super political action committees, Romney also is expected to have a significant financial advantage over the president and his backers. And he also has this going for him: Most Americans say the country is going in the wrong direction under Obama.

With polls showing close races or Obama with a slight edge in key battleground states, Romney's team is weighing whether to try to expand the playing field. They're considering pouring money into three industrial states Democrats have long won but where Republicans sense opportunity: Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Doing so would force Obama to spend money defending his home turf while potentially giving Romney more electoral-vote paths to the White House.

In the coming weeks, Romney will focus on narrowing Obama's advantage with women, arguably the most critical constituency this fall, and energizing white voters who lean more heavily toward the Republican challenger than the Democratic incumbent. And all the while, he'll focus on those who can tip the balance in a close race.

"The people who are really open to voting for me, that I need to get to vote for me to win the presidency are independents and Democrats who've been disappointed by the last four years," Romney told CBS News in an interview this week.

To get them solidly in his camp, Romney will emphasize anew his record in private business as he looks to take advantage of the edge he has on handling the economy.

His advisers say they remain convinced that Romney's successful career at private equity firm Bain Capital holds the key to the White House despite Obama's efforts to undercut the key rationale for Romney's candidacy.

Obama has spent months ? and millions ? working to sully those credentials by criticizing Romney over his Swiss bank account, his former company's instances of outsourcing jobs and his refusal to release more than two years' worth of his own tax returns. The Democrats claim Romney would govern with a profit-at-any-cost mentality that would benefit the wealthy and hurt the middle class.

While the emphasis will be on the economy and jobs, Romney's team will try to make his case by seizing on related issues like welfare reform and entitlement programs as he looks to pick off support from his target demographic groups.

He will rely on running mate Paul Ryan to help him make the case as the primary critic of Obama. It was a role on display Wednesday when the Wisconsin congressman stood at the convention podium. Ryan also brings Midwestern appeal.

To show his more personal side, Romney will turn even more to his wife, Ann.

A warm, charismatic figure, Mrs. Romney has stepped up her campaigning this week and drew rave reviews with her convention speech Tuesday. Aides say she'll be on the road as often as possible, partly because the candidate tends to be more relaxed and confident when she's around. One concern is her health. She suffers from multiple sclerosis, and too much flying or exhaustion can hamper her for days if it's not managed.

To sell himself this fall, Romney has turned to a group of admakers from Hollywood and Madison Avenue, collectively dubbed "Mitt's Mad Men" inside the campaign.

Starting Friday, he'll be able to tap his huge stockpile of general election cash, a chunk of the $177 million he had on hand as August began. Obama's campaign and party had $127 million available, according to the most recent public data.

Romney's cash will be spent primarily on television advertising and get-out-the-vote operations in the most competitive swing-voting states: Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Nevada, Colorado and New Hampshire. He's also targeting North Carolina. And he's looking at making a more aggressive play for Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, where outside groups have been on the air for weeks.

Romney will have only a few more opportunities to send a crystalized message to Americans still questioning whether he has what it takes to be president.

To that end, the stakes are high for a trio of October debates.

He's already been preparing for them by reading heavy briefing books. His advisers view these face-to-face meetings with Obama as the best opportunity for Romney to demonstrate just how he stacks up against the president.

Hollande spurs action on jobs plan as ratings slip

PARIS (Reuters) - The French government is fast-tracking the introduction of a program to tackle rampant unemployment following a slide in President Francois Hollande's approval ratings.

Parliament will reconvene on September 10, two weeks earlier than anticipated, and its first task will be to examine a state-sponsored youth job creation scheme, government spokeswoman Najat Vallaud-Belkacem said on Wednesday.

The program was approved by the cabinet earlier in the day.

She told a news conference it had been decided to move the session forward to ease congestion given the draft law was ready.

French media saw it as a reaction to a rash of surveys showing Hollande's ratings have tumbled to below 50 percent and most people feel he is acting too slowly to resolve the country's problems.

Unemployment in France was running at 10.1 percent in June, according to the EU's statistics agency Eurostat - below the euro area average of 11.2 percent but far higher than Germany's 5.4 percent.

The government's biggest legislative challenge for the weeks ahead will be the 2013 budget, due to go before parliament on September 24. Despite Hollande's comfortable majority, the bill is expected to provoke fierce debate as it needs to slash around 30 billion euros ($38 billion) from the state deficit to comply with EU commitments.

Legislation to ratify the European Union's budget responsibility pact, which ties governments to deficit targets, will be put to parliament in early October and is also expected to provoke dissent from the Socialist Party's left wing.

Hollande's approval ratings have slid faster than any other recent president since his May election as voters lose faith in his ability to deliver on campaign pledges to fix surging unemployment and anemic growth.

Since returning from the summer break, the government has announced a raft of measures aimed at helping households, including lowering fuel prices for a three-month period and permanently raising the ceiling on tax-free saving accounts.

"We are more focused on economic trends than poll trends," Vallaud-Belkacem said. "We will win over the people if we revive the economy, and that's what we're trying to do."

A survey by TNS Sofres for the weekly Le Figaro magazine to be published on Friday shows Hollande's confidence rating slipping by 5 points from July to 50 percent. 'No confidence' responses rose by 6 points to 45 percent. ($1 = 0.7958 euros)

Benzene in California groundwater occurs infrequently and is mainly from natural sources, study finds

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Benzene occurs infrequently in California public supply wells and comes predominantly from naturally occurring petroleum deposits deep in the ground, according to a study by the U.S. Geological Survey. Spills associated with underground fuel storage and above ground distribution systems have long been considered the main source of benzene in groundwater. This unique study finds that contamination most often occurs in older, brackish, groundwater located near naturally occurring deep underground oil and gas deposits.

As part of a statewide studyassessing groundwater quality, scientists analyzed untreated groundwater from wells, not treated tap water. Groundwater used for public supply is typically treated by water providers to ensure compliance with water quality standards.

"This study illustrates the value of letting scientific facts speak for themselves when dealing with critical issues such as the frequency and potential sources of groundwater contamination," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "Mitigation for contamination can be costly, especially if the source is not properly identified, confirming the importance of putting science first."

Benzene is an organic chemical compound. The liquid is derived from petroleum and is used to make motor fuels, insecticides, and other chemical products. California is an important location for this study because it has a high fuel use rate, a high density of fuel storage facilities, abundant natural underground petroleum sources, and large urban populations dependent on groundwater. Because many regions worldwide have similar characteristics, the finding that natural, underground sources of hydrocarbons play an important role in benzene occurrence in groundwater provides new insight for resource managers globally.

According to the study, benzene was found in 1.7 percent of untreated public supply wells, and generally occurred in concentrations below the maximum contaminant level health standard. When detected, nearly half (45 percent) of benzene detections were related to geogenic or natural sources, compared to 27 percent attributed to human activity. The remaining 28 percent of the detections may be either geogenic or anthropogenic, or a mixture of the two. Similar relationships were found for the group of 17 other hydrocarbons analyzed in the study. Data from 14,390 wells sampled throughout California by the California State Water Resources Control Board's Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program and the California Department of Public Healthwere evaluated.

"This study indicates that naturally occurring, deep hydrocarbons can affect the quality of groundwater used for drinking supply," said Ken Belitz, lead scientist for the GAMA Program's Priority Basin Project.

"This research improves our understanding of why and where hydrocarbons occur in groundwater. In general, the unexpected results indicate that hydrocarbons are detected most often in deep aquifers near naturally occurring subsurface petroleum reservoirs, less often in shallow layers subject to fuel spills and leaks on the land surface, and least frequently in the middle layers of aquifer systems. Natural seepage or petroleum-extraction by people could contribute to hydrocarbons reaching aquifer layers used for public supply; this study did not assess the pathway by which natural hydrocarbons reach aquifers," said Matt Landon, a USGS hydrologist and lead author of the study.

The study, funded by the U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development and conducted in cooperation with the GAMA Program's Priority Basin Project, synthesizes statewide data to focus on factors explaining hydrocarbon in aquifers used for public supply in California. The USGS California Water Science Center is the technical lead for the GAMA Program and is monitoring and assessing water quality in 120 priority groundwater basins, and groundwater outside of basins, across California over a ten-year period.
