Thanks for Nothing, Dad!

This Father?s Day, be thankful for your father, no matter how much money he has. After all, a rich dad doesn?t guarantee a cushy inheritance. The millionaire and billionaire fathers in this gallery gave most of their money to someone other than their children. Sometimes the rationale was lofty and philosophical; other times it was the result of a good old family feud.

Romney: Obama denying middle class a 'fair shot'

(AP) ? Mitt Romney launched the next phase of his presidential campaign Friday, kicking off a six-state, small-town bus tour and telling middle-class Americans that President Barack Obama hasn't given them "a fair shot."

"If there has ever been a president who has failed to give the middle class of America a fair shot, it is Barack Obama," the likely Republican presidential nominee told hundreds of people standing in the sunshine outside a farmhouse plastered with his bus tour's slogan, "Every Town Counts."

It was new attack on Obama, Romney's Democratic foe, who has repeatedly argued that it's Democrats who offer a "fair shot" to Americans who "work hard and play by the rules."

The tour is Romney's first traditional campaign swing aimed at undecided voters in a series of battleground states that will decide the presidential election. Romney is hoping to win over people who might have voted four years ago for Obama's promise of hope and change but who are now disappointed in the president.

Still, Obama overshadowed the start of Romney's bus tour as his administration announced it will stop deporting hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. Romney ignored a reporter's question about the change in immigration policy as he shook hands with voters in New Hampshire.

In Friday's remarks, Romney told supporters they don't have to "settle for these years of disappointment and decline," instead offering a nostalgic portrait of a promising small-town America that he promised to revive.

Americans are "worried and anxious. They are tired of being tired. And they are tired of a detached and distant president who never seems to hear their voices," Romney said, as he stood on the bed of a farm's tractor trailer and read his speech from a teleprompter.

The speech, delivered from the farm where he announced his presidential bid last year, was the official kick-off of the six-state bus trek aimed at swaying undecided voters living "off the beaten path" outside of America's big cities. He invoked the names of famous American writers and entrepreneurs like Mark Twain, John Steinbeck and Thomas Edison while lamenting the decline of Rust Belt cities like Detroit, Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

Obama spokeswoman Lis Smith called Romney's speech "angry and empty rhetoric" that offered "zero new solutions to grow the economy and strengthen the middle class."

Romney will spend the next five days visiting what advisers described as towns Obama forgot ? but in states the president won in 2008. From New Hampshire, the tour continues to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa and Michigan. Still, Romney's campaign is visiting relatively friendly territory. In Pennsylvania, for example, two of the stops are in counties won by 2008 Republican nominee John McCain.

Romney's campaign has four buses plastered with a new logo ? one without his "conservative, businessman, leader" tag line from the primary. He will spend each day on the bus and fly to the next state on the tour in the evening. The former Massachusetts governor planned to roll through at least 14 small cities and towns over the five days of the tour.

It's a new mode for Romney, who kept a limited public schedule through late April, May and early June, preferring to spend his time raising money and holding a handful of public events each week. The bus tour will mix small, local venues with larger events and some untraditional campaign stops.

It will bring Romney back to the kind of retail politicking he hasn't engaged in since the early days of the Republican primary, when he campaigned in diners and coffee shops across Iowa and New Hampshire.

With that opportunity, however, comes risk. Romney sometimes ran into trouble in the more unpredictable environments. At one stop at a New Hampshire diner, for example, a gay veteran confronted him about his opposition to gay marriage.

Romney also has long faced questions about his ability to connect with the voters he meets in casual settings, and the bus tour is bound to test him again. Polls show voters personally like Obama more than they like Romney.

Blake Williams, a 26-year-old automation engineer from nearby Saco, Maine, suggested that Romney's long career in business sometimes makes it difficult for him to connect with the middle class. But he said that won't affect his vote.

"We need somebody to get the job done, not charm people," he said.

Nearly one year ago, Romney announced his White House campaign at the farm where he launched the bus tour. He won New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary in a landslide, though it took many more victories to triumph over his GOP rivals. Back at the farm Friday, Romney faced a new opponent in Obama, and a new challenge.

While he led Republican polls in New Hampshire by double digits, the state voted for Obama in 2008 and for Democrat John Kerry in 2004. Romney will have an uphill climb in New Hampshire this year, though his advisers see opportunity there.

Joining Romney on Friday were Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. Both are considered potential vice presidential picks.

After the farm, Romney's bus rolled into Milford, N.H., for ice cream before continuing on to Pennsylvania.

That next leg of the tour ? Romney planned three stops Saturday in Pennsylvania's conservative midsection ? goes through the hard-hit Rust Belt, where structural changes in the economy have led to significant manufacturing job losses. He'll also stop in Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa before heading to Michigan, where his father, George Romney, served as governor.

The Michigan stop will be Romney's first trip back home since becoming the presumptive Republican nominee, a standing his father tried but failed to win in 1968.

Cornwall College praised by inspectors

Cornwall College praised by inspectors

Cornwall College has been praised for the quality of its higher education courses by the Quality Assurance Agency, the Ofsted for universities and colleges.

The outcome of the college?s Integrated Quality and Enhancement Review was published on June 6. The assessment focuses on academic standards and quality of learning, both of which the body said it had ?confidence? in; the highest of three grades.

It was also evaluated on its ability to provide public information about itself, which the QAA said was ?reliable?, also the highest ruling.

There was praise for the college?s strong employer links, which help students gain work-based and work-related skills and knowledge.

Students said that work-related opportunities at the college boosted their employability and that members of staff work in the industry relevant to the courses they lecture on.

The college?s support for academic activity by staff and the ?impressive output of research? was also highlighted. Dave Linnell, principal of Cornwall College, said: ?We?ve set our fees for higher education courses at ?6,000 a year for those starting in September 2012 which is considerably lower than many of the region?s establishments.

This was a conscious decision to offer as many people as possible the chance to gain a high quality university-level qualification. The report from the QAA proves that our standards match or exceed other institutions.

?We have been given the highest grading possible in the key areas of academic standards and learning opportunities which reflects our ability to deliver the best possible education.?

Cornwall College is running a university courses open day on Friday, June 15, at its campuses in Camborne, Newquay, St Austell and Saltash to give prospective students a taste of student life.

Places must be booked in advance at www.cornwall.ac.uk or by calling 0845 2232567 for more details.

Republican governors urge Romney to be 'big and bold'

Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana said Sunday that Mitt Romney needs to do more than fire rhetorical shots across Obama?s bow, urging Romney to be 'big and bold' with a plan to reform government.

Mitt Romney is coming off a pretty good week. He out fund-raised Barack Obama by $16 million, according to the latest monthly report, and he jumped all over Obama for the President?s gaffe about the economy?s private sector ?doing fine.?

But it?s still 149 days until the presidential election. And if Romney was feeling good about where he stands in the race, a couple of Republican governors brought him back to earth Sunday.

Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Mitch Daniels of Indiana both went on TV talk shows to suggest that Romney needs to do more than fire rhetorical shots across Obama?s bow, hoping the incumbent will stumble again or that somebody else ? the irrepressible Bill Clinton? ? knocks him off-message.

Gov. Walker, who just won a big recall election ? a big loss for labor unions, a key part of the Democratic base ? put it this way:

"I don't think we win if it's just about a referendum on Barack Obama," Walker said on Face the Nation. "I think people like [Wisconsin Rep.] Paul Ryan and others hope that he goes big and bold." Walker said, adding that ?Romney?s got a shot if the ?R? next to his name doesn?t just stand for Republican, it stands for reformer, if he shows my state and he shows Americans that he?s got a plan to take on those reforms.?

?Big and bold? is not necessarily the phrase one would attach to Romney, whose history in business and politics has been marked by caution.

Walker also took issue with something Romney said last week when he derided Obama for suggesting that one problem with the economy is ?oftentimes cuts initiated by governors or mayors who are not getting the kind of help that they have in the past from the federal government.?

?He wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers,? Romney said of Obama. ?He says we need more firemen, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? It?s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.?

That?s a misreading of what happened in Wisconsin, Walker suggested Sunday.

"I know in my state our reform allowed us to protect firefighters, police officers and teachers; that's not what I think when I think of big government," he said.

On Fox News Sunday, Gov. Daniels had a similar message for Romney and the GOP:

"It would be, I think, a huge mistake for Republicans to misread Wisconsin as some kind of great harbinger. I don't see it that way at all," he said. "I mean, there was clearly a threat of 'enough already' vote there that said it is an abuse of the process with all of the recalls. It's not even clear that Gov. Romney will be that strong in Wisconsin."

Like Walker, Daniels also urged Romney to move beyond his political comfort zone, more ?big and bold.?

"The American people, I think, will rightly demand to know something more than he's not President Obama," he said. ?He?s got to use this fall as an opportunity to build a consensus across ? I hope ? a broad spectrum of Americans to make the big changes we need to restore a vibrant, private sector.?

Though he may have had a frustrating week, Obama is not exactly on the ropes despite gaffes and stumbles ? not to mention an economy slow to recover. When matched against Romney, he's still up a tick in the Real Clear Politics polling average, and he's very near the critical 50 percent approval rate for incumbent presidents seeking reelection.

As Charles Babington of the Associated Press points out, about 10 battleground states could determine the election, seven of which have unemployment rates better than the national average.

?Most of the states are led by Republican governors eager to highlight their progress in creating jobs. That complicates Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's claim that the economy has been so mismanaged that Obama deserves to be ousted,? Babington writes. ?In addition, a chief Romney criticism, that Obama is hindering energy production, is undermined by robust drilling for natural gas that's creating jobs and some wealthy landowners in two important states, Ohio and Pennsylvania.?
