So you've survived the robot revolution and you're waiting for either a full-blown apocalypse, or Mr. Anderson. But how are you going to kill time when our new masters are eating controller PCBs for breakfast? With a steampunk joystick, of course. Jason Torchinsky from Jalopnik has done just that, making an Atari 2600 controller by repurposing a power seat control switch panel from a 1980s Oldsmobile. It's no Avenger Controller Elite, but it certainly does the job, and due to a standardized wiring layout it's functional on other hardware of the same era. And for all you MAME heroes, Jason says it would be no more complicated to hook it up to a PC or Mac using a USB keyboard encoder. Follow the source link for a neat walkthrough of the project and jump over the break to see a video of the seat switch in action, shot in the mancave of yesteryear.

Catholic official convicted in priest-abuse trial

Matt Rourke / AP

Monsignor William Lynn walks to the Criminal Justice Center before a scheduled verdict reading on Friday in Philadelphia.

By NBC News and news services

UPDATED AT 2:17 p.m. ET: PHILADELPHIA -- A Roman Catholic church official was convicted Friday of child endangerment but acquitted of conspiracy in a groundbreaking clergy-abuse trial, becoming the first U.S. church official convicted of a crime for how he handled abuse claims.

Monsignor William Lynn helped the archdiocese keep predators in ministry, and the public in the dark, by telling parishes their priest was being removed for health reasons and then sending the men to unsuspecting churches, prosecutors said.

Lynn, 61, had faced about 10 to 20 years in prison if convicted of all three counts he faced ? conspiracy and two counts of child endangerment. He was convicted on one of the endangerment counts, leaving him with the possibility of?up?to seven years in prison.

The jury began deliberating earlier this month after hearing 10 weeks of testimony in a trial that re-focused attention on the broader sex abuse scandal that has rocked the Catholic Church, costing billions in settlements, driving prominent U.S. dioceses into bankruptcy and testing the faith of Roman Catholics.

In this case, Lynn's job was supervising 800 priests, including investigating sex abuse claims, from 1992 to 2004, in the nation's sixth largest Archdiocese, with 1.5 million members.

Lynn was on trial with Rev. James Brennan. Brennan, 49,?was charged with the attempted rape of a 14-year-old boy in 1996, along with child endangerment.

In Brennan's case, the jury remained deadlocked?on one count of attempted rape and another count of endangering the welfare of a child, NBC10.com reported.

Read complete coverage from Philadelphia's NBC10.com of the priest abuse trial

Brennan did not testify during the trial, while Lynn spent three days on the witness stand saying that he did what he could to stop molestation by clergy but that he was only doing his job when he reassigned suspected clergy.

On cross-examination, Lynn acknowledged that he had not helped the 10-year-old altar boy raped by the Rev. Edward Avery in 1999, seven years after Lynn met with another Avery accuser.

?And I'm sorry about that,? Lynn said.

Avery is in prison after admitting the crime.

One of the key exhibits was a gray folder found in a locked safe at the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The folder contains a list of 35 suspected predator-priests -- and was compiled by Lynn in 1994. At least one priest on the list was a parish pastor until this year.

Lynn, the former secretary for clergy, testified that he created the list fromsecret church files containing hundreds of child sex-abuse complaints. He said he hoped Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua and other superiors would address the growing crisis.

It's unclear who put the surviving copy of Lynn's list in the safe. Lynn denied doing so, or owning the safe. The gray file was found when the safe was smashed open in 2006, two years after Lynn left his archdiocese job. An in-house lawyer said he put the gray folder in his files in 2006 without realizing the list -- sought by a grand jury in 2004 -- was inside.

A new team of lawyers for the archdiocese turned it over to prosecutors in early February, days after Bevilacqua died. Lynn's trial started March 26.

The jury heard from more than a dozen alleged victims, including a nun, a former priest and a series of troubled adults.

Lynn said he did more than his colleagues to help victims and advance the church's response to both accusers and the accused priests, who were often sent for evaluation or treatment before transfers to new, unsuspecting parishes. Lynn said that only Bevilacqua had the power to remove priests from ministry.

But prosecutors say Lynn could have quit or called police. Instead, he stayed in the job for 12 years -- and acknowledged he never once contacted authorities.

Making An Investment In The Gold Retirement Program | Info Abounds

time Posted in Uncategorized

A lot of people these days don?t think of gold among the choices for a retirement plan. Many assume that a retirement plan only need to be in the mode of money and common investing plans. They simply don?t have any idea about what we call retirement gold. They do not have any inkling that gold could be a great investment for retirement.

So why make an investment in gold retirement?

The biggest reason is that gold is an actual asset. The second is because it is its own store of value.

In the past, the dollar was determined by the worth of gold. It was called the gold standard. Currently, things are very different. The dollar isn?t anymore dependent on gold. The US money is now simply paper, the value of it being based upon the dictates of the administration as well as the economic situations. Yet gold still has its worth in itself.

Gold is a hard asset. You may hold it in contrast to stocks and shares. It is possible to keep it by yourself unlike stocks and shares. If you make an investment in stocks and shares, you will know this. When the stock market crashed, the traders forfeited all they had invested in. Yet gold nonetheless has its own worth in itself.

Essential matter: Gold is actually more reliable than dollars, stocks, bonds, and sometimes, even real estate investment.

What about inflation?

Retired people are often susceptible to inflation. The very same dollars that they worked hard for 20 years ago has lost much of its value now!

Great news! There are numerous instances when gold improved while the dollar reduced in worth. The rising cost of living helps make the monetary value of gold actually higher? in part due to the erosion of the dollar?s value.

But be warned. Just like a number of other assets, gold?s value likewise fluctuates.

The prices for gold will be different every once in awhile, occasionally, gold will be worth some dough and some other times, it will be worth 10 times more than what was bought it for. Once the costs are good to get gold, it?ll be wise to check into this investment option. However, it?s exactly the same with regards to trying to sell the gold in the future because the rates will vary and the prices will be better as compared to other instances.

What amount must you invest in the retirement gold plan?

This is a simple solution. The most common advice for everyone, this includes retirees, is to get twenty to thirty percent of your assets in gold.

One thing is important to understand, gold is a wonderful asset choice for the long run for retirement. It may even have a good pay off and might lead to an early retirement! It just depends upon the circumstances. It really is worth everybody?s effort to think about making an investment in a retirement gold program.

West Seattle Blog? ? From the real-estate file: Morgan Junction ...

  • Oh happy day! I?m all for small biz, but those buildings have seen better days and are so in need of an upgrade. All that?s left is for Chuck & Sally?s to get retrofitted/sold/demolished/rebuilt and this little neighborhood will finally start looking respectable. Great news!

    Comment by Chuck & Sally's Van Man ? 4:56 pm June 21, 2012 #

  • Just what we need more condo?s. While i agree that site is a bit of an eyesore,West Seattle is getting overrun with Apts and Condo?s, also the Bridge is already a parking lot at peak times. There are only so many people the present infastructure will support.

    Comment by Pam Ford ? 6:20 pm June 21, 2012 #

  • I don?t think we will see new condos built anytime soon. There is no market for them still. But apartments, yes. The vacancy rate in Seattle right now is like 2%. It is crazy which is why so many new buildings are going up. So, one could argue new apartments are exactly what Seattle needs, purely based on economics.

    Comment by kgdlg ? 6:54 pm June 21, 2012 #

  • Pam, normally I?d agree?not a big fan of the squeeze myself (though I do feel good knowing it?s helping minimize urban sprawl, at least on some level). Maybe you don?t live in the Morgan neighborhood; one of these businesses is a magnet for the transients who come and buy cheap beer and crash in the ?family? park. There is litter, there is noise?just not a benefit to the neighborhood IMHO. I feel worse for the dry cleaner as I used to do a lot of business there. Overall, I think a new building will be a plus and welcome anything besides what?s there now.

    Comment by Chuck & Sally's Van Man ? 6:56 pm June 21, 2012 #

  • Better that the eyesore that?s there now

    Comment by DW ? 7:03 pm June 21, 2012 #

  • Chuck and sally?s van man, i live one block away from there, and yes i agree it attracts transients, but i am sure the land could be put to a better use for the community other than more apts. And the park for family?s is already placed next to two bars. Kgdig almost every apt building i pass had apts for rent i am sure the vacancy rate is much higher than 2%.

    Comment by Pam Ford ? 8:01 pm June 21, 2012 #

  • The thing that realy needs to be asked is are you ready for this one, What is mans natural habbitat. Where is man suposed to live? Could it be that what we as man [good or bad] is all part of coarse of nature. After all we are animals of the earth. So maybe what we do is all part of the earths evolution. Makes you kind of wonder?

    Comment by miws ? 9:58 pm June 21, 2012 #

  • While the area needs some change for the better, I don?t know if apartments are the answer. What I see going up in West Seattle aren?t very attractive and I question the overkill. Property owners by and large always take better care than renters.
Perhaps my biggest concern is whether the TOD sites mean the developers don?t have to bother providing parking for their residences. I can?t seem to find a definitive answer, and am worried we are headed in the same frustrating direction as Seattle proper with cars and parking issues. West Seattle seems to be the final frontier for the free and easy-parking that is.

    Comment by Cole ? 10:05 pm June 21, 2012 #

  • Cole, I couldn?t find that answer either ? but with this building on the RapidRide line, I?m 99% sure it means parking not required.

    Comment by WSB ? 10:12 pm June 21, 2012 #

  • Parking is not required in urban villages in Seattle. I will find out if Morgan counts as one of these. Most lenders, even with this code, require developers to build some parking at least.

I have to boldly disagree with the statement above that ?owners by and large always take better care than renters.? I think this is a complete falsehood perpetrated by the ownership, often elite, in this country and not at all based in fact. You know how many slumlords exist in this world? LOTS. And renters and neighborhoods suffer because of them.

This is the perfect site for increased density. Next to many bus lines, shopping and food. In my opinion, if we don?t put apartments on main arterials, where should they go? In single family neighborhoods? This is what keeps our single family areas intact. As mentioned above, the numbers support this development ? there are not enough apartments in Seattle right now and unless we build more, rents will continue to sky rocket. It is bad out there right now. And while I am cranky?I believe the design flaws that we all complain about so much are as much a result of capitalism than anything else. Private investors and places like pension funds build these buildings and they could care less about award winning design. Take a look at your 401k next time the statement comes, I bet some ofit is in real estate?

    Comment by kgdlg ? 11:18 pm June 21, 2012 #

  • Can?t relate to your wonder @ boy because your thoughts are not even comprehensible but I think anything in that are is a plus. Maybe the TH?s like you see North of Chuck and Sally?s, fewer then condos and nice units to draw a first time buyer crowd. The bridge is over and for us that have lived here for years we just have to realize with growth comes the unfathomable-traffic.

Southern Baptists elect 1st black president

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? At the end of the day Wednesday, the presidency of the Southern Baptist Convention will pass to an African-American pastor for the first time.

The nation's largest Protestant denomination voted Tuesday to elect the Rev. Fred Luter Jr. to lead them, an important step for a denomination that was formed on the wrong side of slavery before the Civil War and had a reputation for supporting segregation and racism during much of the last century.

In a news conference after the vote, Luter said he doesn't think his election is some kind of token gesture.

"If we stop appointing African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics to leadership positions after this, we've failed," he said. "... I promise you I'm going to do all that I can to make sure this is not just a one-and-done deal."

Faced with declining membership, the SBC has been making efforts to appeal to a more diverse group of believers.

Some Southern Baptists also believe a proposal to adopt an optional alternative name, Great Commission Baptists, will bring in believers who have negative associations with the current name. The results of a vote on that proposal was to be announced Wednesday.

Luter was unopposed when he was elected by thousands of enthusiastic delegates Tuesday at the SBC annual meeting in his hometown of New Orleans.

He spoke about the decline in SBC membership and his own efforts to grow his church, which included intensive outreach to men, and his concern that men in his inner-city neighborhood were not taking responsibility for their children.

He began to cry as he recalled growing up with a divorced mother and no father in the house, saying he asked God, "Let me be that role model to my son that I didn't have." And he recounted how his son followed him into ministry and asked Luter to be his best man at his wedding.

Luter described what he hopes to achieve for the convention, saying he has always had the ability to get along with everyone. He plans to use that skill to bring denominational leaders together to discuss how they can leave aside their differences and work together to spread the Gospel.

Pastor David Crosby of First Baptist New Orleans nominated Luter, calling him a "fire-breathing, miracle-working pastor" who "would likely be a candidate for sainthood if he were Catholic."

Crosby said the SBC needs Luter at the head of the table as it increasingly focuses on diversifying its membership.

"Many leaders are convinced this nomination is happening now by the provenance of God," he said.

Luter wiped tears from his eyes as he accepted the position. Two female ushers from the Franklin Avenue congregation embraced, swaying and weeping with joy.

"I think I'm just too overwhelmed by it right now to speak," said another member, Malva Marsalis.

A minister from Luter's church, Darren Martin, said the SBC's past support of slavery and segregation are well known, but Luter's election was "a true sign ... that change from within has really come. ...Christ is at the center of the SBC."

The proposal to adopt an alternative name was more controversial than Luter's election. The Tuesday vote was too close to call by a show of hands so paper ballots were cast.

Those who supported the alternative name argued that "Southern Baptist" can be a turn-off to potential believers.

They said adopting "Great Commission Baptists" as an optional name would help missionaries and church planters to reach more people for Christ.

An online poll by the SBC's Lifeway Research of 2,000 Americans found that 44 percent said knowing a church was Southern Baptist would negatively affect their decision to visit or join.

Those who opposed the alternative said Southern Baptists should be proud of the denomination's name and reputation.

The "Great Commission" refers to Matthew 28:16-20, in which Jesus instructs his disciples at Galilee to go forth and make disciples of all nations.

Lumia 900 owner vents Windows Phone 8 frustrations, Stephen Elop responds

If you've been following our Windows Phone 8 coverage today, you know that anybody who buys a Windows Phone today will not be able to upgrade to WP8 when it ships this fall. If you were an early adopter that's not such a bad deal, but if you bought a Lumia 900 oh, say, three weeks ago you might be upset -- and rightly so. And rightfully angry is Luke, who sent us an email he fired off to Nokia's Stephen Elop and AT&T's Ralph de la Vega in which he asks why he shouldn't, right now, turn around and return his phone.

I just watched the Windows Phone 8 announcement and learned that the Lumia will not be upgradeable to WP8, it will more or less get a skin with the new live tiles and a few other features... at the end of the day unless one of you responds and convinces me to stay with Microsoft Windows Phone, Nokia Lumia or Att wireless I will just wash my hands of all three companies and move over to Verizon.

Surprise surprise, Elop responded very promptly, stating:

We have a lot of exciting capabilities coming as part of a pattern of updates for the existing Lumia products. This includes some of the most significant visual elements of WP8 - for example, the new start screen. As we have always been, Nokia is committed to delivering a long term experience to any purchasers of our products.

Granted, Nokia is bringing some nice updates to current Lumias, like some Scalado-augmented photo magic, but Elop's mention of "significant visual elements" leaves us wanting. We're waiting to hear what Luke's going to do, but here's your chance to weigh in. What do you think he should do? Full emails are after the break.

    Central Methodist University president retiring

Read?more: Local, Education, News, Central Methodist University President Retiring, Cmu President Retiring, Marianne Inman Retiring, Marianne Inman Cmu
FAYETTE, MO. -- Dr. Marianne Inman, the president of Central Methodist University for the past 17 years, has announced plans to retire, effective June 30, 2013.

?Her departure will mark the close of one of the brightest chapters in the nearly 160-year history of the University, said Glenn Cox, CMU Board of Trustees chair. Cox said the board will determine its search process in the coming weeks.

?Some highlights of Inman's leadership since she joined the institution in July 1995 include:

    - A nearly fivefold increase in student enrollment, to almost 5,300 last fall
    - Completion of three capital campaigns, netting the University nearly $50 million
    - A near tripling of the University endowment, to $31 million
    - Growth in CMU operating revenues from $8.5 million when she arrived, to more than $26 million this past year
    - Campus improvements totaling in excess of $50 million

One of the milestones for which Inman is particularly proud is that CMU will this year award more than a thousand college degrees for the first time in its history. Another is the expansion of CMU academic programming to sites across the state, many in partnership with Missouri community colleges and other organizations.

?The opportunity to work with an outstanding Board of Trustees and a first-rate faculty and staff in service to Central Methodist University has been the high point of my career as an educator. I feel privileged to have been part of this institution of opportunity for students all around our state,? Inman said. ?The timing of this decision seems appropriate in that we are completing one major campus project (the restoration of historic Classic Hall) this year, and CMU will require continuity in leadership over the next number of years in order to implement the highest priority recommendations from our recently concluded master plan.?

Inman and her husband, David, plan to relocate to Georgetown, Tex. next summer.
