Syria conference leaves open Assad question

GENEVA (AP) ? An international conference on Saturday accepted a U.N.-brokered peace plan for Syria, but left open the key question of whether the country's president could be part of a transitional government.

The U.S. backed away from insisting that the plan explicitly exclude President Bashar Assad from any role in a new government, hoping the concession would encourage Russia to put greater pressure on its longtime ally to end the violent crackdown that the opposition says has claimed over 14,000 lives.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton insisted that Assad would still have to go, saying it is now "incumbent on Russia and China to show Assad the writing on the wall."

"There is a credible alternative to the Assad regime," she said. "What we have done here is to strip away the fiction that he and those with blood on their hands can stay in power."

Moscow had refused to back a provision that would call for Assad to step aside, insisting that outsiders cannot order a political solution for Syria and accusing the West of ignoring the darker side of the Syrian opposition. The opposition has made clear it would not take part in a government in which Assad still held power.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov underlined that the plan does not require Assad's ouster, saying there is "no attempt in the document to impose on the Syrian people any type of transitional process."

More than a year into the uprising, Syria's opposition is still struggling to overcome infighting and inexperience, preventing the movement from gaining the traction it needs to instill confidence in its ability to govern.

The U.N. plan calls for establishing a transitional government of national unity, with full executive powers, that could include members of Assad's government and the opposition and other groups. It would oversee the drafting of a new constitution and elections.

Syria envoy Kofi Annan said following talks that "it is for the people of Syria to come to a political agreement."

"I will doubt that the Syrians who have fought so hard to have independence ... will select people with blood on their hands to lead them," he said.

The envoy had earlier warned the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council ? Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States ? that if they fail to act at the talks hosted by the United Nations at its European headquarters in Geneva, they face an international crisis of "grave severity" that could spark violence across the region and provide a new front for terrorism.

"History is a somber judge and it will judge us all harshly, if we prove incapable of taking the right path today," he said.

Syria, verging on a full-blown civil war, has endured a particularly bloody week, with up to 125 people reported killed nationwide on Thursday alone.

The opposition's divisions are tied to issues at the heart of the revolution: Whether to seek dialogue with the regime and what ideology should guide a post-Assad Syria.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, director of the Britain based Syrian observatory for human rights, said following the agreement that "no member of the Syrian opposition will accept to be part of a transitional government while Assad is still in power."

"Assad's staying in power will mean the continuation of the bloodshed in Syria," he said.

Unlike Libya's National Transitional Council, which brought together most factions fighting Gadhafi's regime and was quickly recognized by much of the international community, Syria's opposition has no leadership on the ground.

Regime opponents in Syria are a diverse group, representing the country's ideological, sectarian and generational divide. They include dissidents who spent years in prison, tech-savvy activists in their 20s, former Marxists, Islamists and Paris-based intellectuals.

Communication between those abroad and those in the country is extremely difficult. Political activists in Syria are routinely rounded up and imprisoned. Many have gone into hiding, communicating only through Skype using fake names, and the country is largely sealed off to exiled dissidents and foreign journalists.

International tensions also heightened last week after Syria shot down a Turkish warplane, leading to Turkey setting up anti-aircraft guns on its border with its neighbor.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague noted that U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told diplomats a U.N. monitoring mission in Syria would have to be pulled back if no diplomatic solution is found.

"We haven't reached agreement in advance with Russia and China ? that remains very difficult. I don't know if it will be possible to do so. In the interest of saving thousands of lives of our international responsibilities, we will try to do so," Hague told reporters. "It's been always been our view, of course, that a stable future for Syria, a real political process, means Assad leaving power."

The head of the struggling U.N. observer mission, Norwegian Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, has described the 300 monitors approved by the U.N. Security Council to enforce a failed April cease-fire as being largely confined to bureaucratic tasks and calling Syrians by phone because of the dangers on the ground. Their mandate expires on July 20.

"Ultimately, we want to stop the bloodshed in Syria. If that comes through political dialogue, we are willing to do that," said Khalid Saleh, a spokesman for the Syrian National Council, a coalition of Syrian opposition groups based in Istanbul, Turkey. "We are not willing to negotiate (with) Mr. Assad and those who have murdered Syrians. We are not going to negotiate unless they leave Syria."

Clinton said Thursday in Riga, Latvia, that all participants in the Geneva meeting, including Russia, were on board with the transition plan. She told reporters that the invitations made clear that representatives "were coming on the basis of (Annan's) transition plan."

The United Nations says violence in the country has worsened since a cease-fire deal in April, and the bloodshed appears to be taking on dangerous sectarian overtones, with growing numbers of Syrians targeted on account of their religion. The increasing militarization of both sides in the conflict has Syria heading toward civil war.

Duke Energy warns of ?President paying your bills? scam

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Duke Energy is alerting customers about a new identity theft scam claiming that their utility bills will be paid by President Obama through a federal program.

The company says that the scammers are contacting customers in person, through fliers, or through social media and text messages.

The customers are then asked for their birth day, social security number, and bank account information before being given a false bank account through which their utility bills can be paid through the program.

In reality, the company says, there is no money in the fake account, and the customer's bills are not being paid.

Duke Energy, along with the Better Business Bureau, is working to keep consumers educated, and are asking customers to follow a few simple steps in order to avoid getting involved in this or any other scam:

  • Never provide your social security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone or at your home unless you initiated the contact and feel confident with whom you are speaking.
  • If you receive a call claiming to be your utility company and feel pressured for immediate payment or personal information, hang up the phone and call the customer service number on your utility bill.
  • Never allow anyone into your home to check electrical wiring, natural gas pipes or appliances unless you have scheduled an appointment or have reported a utility problem. Also, ask utility employees for proper identification.
  • Always think safety first. Do not give in to high pressure tactics over the phone for information or in person to get into your home.

Calorie Does Not Equal Calorie | Zero To Hero TV Health & Fitness

People following a Mediterranean-style diet may have the best chance of keeping weight off ? and doing it without causing negative side effects ? according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers led by Cara Ebbeling at Boston Children?s Hospital compared three different diets in people who had already lost weight. Knowing that dieters often struggle to maintain their slimmer bodies, the researchers sought to study the impact of the diets on energy expenditure ? that is, which diet helps people burn the most calories a day and would, therefore, help keep them from regaining the weight. The researchers measured the participants? levels of hormones, enzymes, blood fats and insulin sensitivity, and other markers of heart health and diabetes risk.

The study included 21 overweight and obese adults, aged 18 to 40, who first followed a three-month diet plan (containing 45% of total calories from carbohydrates, 30% from fat and 25% from protein) and lost 10% to 15% of their body weight. A month later, participants were randomly rotated through the three test diets, each for one month at a time:

  • Low-fat: about 20% of total calories from fat, 60% from carbohydrates and 20% from protein. The diet focuses on whole-grain foods and fruits and vegetables, and reduces intake of fatty meats, oils, nuts and other high-fat products
  • Low-carb: modeled after the Atkins diet, with 10% of total calories from carbs, 30% from protein and 60% from fat. The diet minimizes intake of carbohydrates, including bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, baked goods and starchy vegetables, while upping consumption of beef, fish, chicken, eggs, cheese and some fruits and veggies
  • Low-glycemic index: similar to the Mediterranean diet, with 40% of total calories from carbs, 40% from fat and 20% from protein. The diet emphasizes whole grains like oatmeal and brown rice, low-fat meats like fish, fruits and vegetables, beans and healthy fats from olive oil and nuts. It avoids highly processed, sugary carbs and snack foods.

Participants on the low-carb diet burned the most calories ? on average 325 calories more a day compared with the low-fat group ? but there was a side effect. These dieters also saw increases in the stress hormone cortisol and CRP, a marker of inflammation and a risk factor for heart disease. (In another, unrelated study published in BMJ on Tuesday, researchers confirmed that Swedish women on a low-carbohydrate diet such as Atkins increased their risk of heart disease by 28% compared to women not on such diets.)

People on the low-glycemic index diet burned about 150 calories more each day than the low-fat group, about the equivalent of an hour of moderate exercise, but without the harmful heart effects. The low-fat dieters burned the fewest calories a day, and they also showed increases in triglycerides and lower levels of good cholesterol.

?For weight loss and heart disease prevention, avoid diets that severely restrict any major nutrient, either fat or carbohydrate,? study author Dr. David Ludwig, director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children?s Hospital, told Bloomberg News. ?Instead focus on reducing the highly processed carbohydrates that cause surges and crashes in blood sugar like white bread, white rice, prepared breakfast cereals, those low-fat snack foods and concentrated sugars.?

Those surges and crashes may trigger increases in hunger and appetite, by prompting the brain to seek out calories to make up for the loss it senses. If the body thinks it?s not getting enough calories, it also dials down metabolism to conserve energy ? and that could lead people to regain lost weight.

What the study suggests is that a calorie isn?t just a calorie. ?It says that from a metabolic perspective all calories are not alike,? Ludwig told the Boston Globe. ?The quality of the calories going in affects the number of calories going out.?

Ludwig says the low-glycemic index diet represents a good ?middle ground? ? it doesn?t drastically reduce any major nutrient, and instead focuses on including a wide variety of foods with high-quality nutrients ? for maintaining weight loss.

Some nutrition and weight loss researchers commenting on the new study qualified its results. In an interview with USA Today, Marion Nestle, a nutrition professor at New York University and author of Why Calories Count, noted, for example, that longer-term studies of people dieting in the real world (in contrast, the current study gave participants prepared food, much of which they ate at the hospital) showed little difference between different types of diets on weight loss and maintenance. The key is simply to eat less, she said.

New taxes on forgiven mortgage debt to hit owners

(MoneyWatch) Soon homeowners facing a short sale or foreclosure will have to pay federal income tax on any portion of the loan that is forgiven unless Congress intervenes.

The Mortgage Debt Relief Act Congress, passed in 2007, will expire at the end of the year. For the past five years, homeowners who conducted a short sale, are in foreclosure or restructured their mortgage and had part of the principal balance forgiven didn't have to pay any income tax on the forgiven debt.

But starting in 2013, homeowners who short sell their $150,000 home for $120,000 will have to pay taxes on the $30,000 worth of debt that was forgiven, because the federal government considers it income, even though homeowners never actually put any of this "phantom" income in their pockets.

Will short sales save the housing market?
Lawmakers push bill to help homeowners refinance
9 ways to get the mortgage of your dreams

The legislation was initially passed to help homeowners struggling to pay their mortgage when the housing market crisis first began. But the market is still far away from recovery and real estate agents and legislators alike have argued that homeowners are still struggling and need relief.

"Homeowners facing a short sale or foreclosure are already in financial distress and are most likely unable to pay additional taxes," said Moe Veissi, president of the National Association of Realtors, in an e-mail. "These individuals have suffered through an economically devastating short sale or foreclosure of their home, and in many instances are unable to pay additional taxes, which only adds to their overall burden."

NAR is lobbying Congress to extend the tax relief past the 2012 deadline. Several legislators have introduced bills in both the House and Senate that would extend the tax relief.

The senate bill introduced by Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan would extend tax relief through 2013, while a House bill sponsored by Republican Representative Tom Reed of New York would extend the relief a year and another bill sponsored by Democratic Representative Charles Rangel, also of New York, would extend it two more years.

Though the three bills vary on how long they will continue the tax relief, they are all nearly identical in their goal to keep forgiven debt from a short sale, foreclosure or refinancing untaxed. All three bills have gone to committee. If the House and Senate are unable to come to an agreement, millions of homeowners could potentially wind up paying income tax on their mortgage deficiencies.

A Nation Of Meat Eaters: See How It All Adds Up

As Allison Aubrey and Dan Charles reported today on Morning Edition, meat has more of an impact on the environment than any other food we eat. That's because livestock require so much more food, water, land, and energy than plants to raise and transport. (Listen to the audio above for their conversation with Morning Edition's Linda Wertheimer.)

Take a look here at what goes into just one quarter-pound of hamburger meat. (Mobile users: To see the images, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "View Non-Mobile Version Of This Story.")

And that's not even including the animal's waste or the methane emissions from its digestion.

But there are fewer cows around than there were in the 1970s.

Cattle inventory, in millions

In the meantime, though, farmers and scientists have found ways to get more meat out of every cow. So even though cattle inventory has dropped, the U.S. is still producing more beef now than in the 1970s.

And if you look at the past century, meat consumption overall in the U.S. has risen dramatically. It's only in the past few years that it has begun to drop a bit.

U.S. total meat consumption, in billion pounds

Though meat consumption in the U.S. has dropped off slightly in recent years, at 270.7 pounds per person a year, we still eat more meat per person here than in almost any other country on the planet. Only the Luxumbourgers eat more meat than we do.

As U.S. beef consumption began to decline in the 1970s, poultry began to rise quickly. A couple of years ago, chicken surpassed beef as our No. 1 meat of choice. Our consumption of pork has also risen slightly over the years.
