slideshow The Hawks are officially one step closer to NCAA Division II membership.

Shorter University received word from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) that it has successfully completed Candidacy Year 1 in the association?s Division II membership process and is now in Candidacy Year 2.

University President Dr. Don Dowless and Director of Athletics Bill Peterson were notified in a conference call with the NCAA early Friday morning.

?We are very excited about this achievement and moving on to the next stage in the NCAA Division II membership process,? said Peterson. "This is a great day for Shorter University and for our athletic department."

The membership process is a three-year process and Shorter, now one-third of the way through the progression, is on pace to gain active membership status by the 2014-15 academic year.

Shorter will begin its first full NCAA Division II schedule this year as Second-Year Candidacy members of the Gulf South Conference. Though it will not be eligible to compete for NCAA national championships until it completes the membership process and gains active member status, Shorter will play a full GSC schedule in all 14 conference sponsored sports and will count in regular season standings.

Shorter will compete against such GSC members as Valdosta State, West Georgia, Alabama-Huntsville, North Alabama, West Alabama, Delta State and West Florida, among others.

?Our participation in the Gulf South Conference is one of the most exciting aspects of our move to the NCAA,? Peterson said. "The GSC is the SEC of NCAA Division II so we will have our work cut out for us. That said, I know that our coaches and our student-athletes are looking forward to the challenge."

The NCAA approved Shorter?s move from Candidacy Year 1 to Candidacy Year 2 after reviewing over 1,200 pages of material submitted to the association by the university and its Department of Athletics as part of the membership process? annual review procedure.

In a yearlong process spearheaded by Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Dr. Richard Cowan, Senior Associate Athletic Director Matt Green and Senior Woman Administrator Rachel Rogers, Shorter completed an 1,104-page Annual Report and Institutional Self-Study Guide, created the institution?s first Compliance Manual and Student-Athlete Handbook and reconstructed the Department of Athletics? 30-page Strategic Plan that outlines specific goals and objectives of the Department through the year 2015.

?I just cannot say enough about the fine job done by Dr. Richard Cowan, Matt Green and Rachel Rogers in leading this process,? said Peterson. "They are a special group of people that worked very hard to make this happen. We salute their efforts."

With the addition of Shorter and Union University out of Jackson, Tenn., the Gulf South Conference now has 10 members. The GSC extended an invitation to Shorter?s longtime Southern States Athletic Conference rival Lee University pending its acceptance into the NCAA Division II membership process and will welcome Florida Tech as a football only member in 2013.

Shorter completed its final year in the NAIA with its best in program history.

The Hawks finished No. 2 in the Learfield Sports Directors? Cup ? Shorter?s second straight top three finish ? on the shoulders of two more national championships, one in men?s outdoor track and another in softball. The Directors? Cup finish is the highest of any athletic program in the state of Georgia.

Since 2008, Shorter has compiled eight team national championships ? four in the NAIA and four in competitive cheerleading through NCA ? and 19 individual national championships. In addition to back-to-back top three Directors? Cup finishes, Shorter has also seen its coaches receive National Coach of the Year honors on five different occasions.

BMW brings iDrive Touch, 3D maps to ConnectedDrive, LTE integration coming soon

Hot on the heels of the news it'll be the first auto company to sport Nuance's Dragon Drive! on some of its fancy rides, BMW's now announced a handful of improvements and additions to its elegant ConnectedDrive infotainment system. For starters, the German outfit's bringing an all-new feature dubbed iDrive Touch (available in China this month, elsewhere at some point next year), giving drivers the ability to use a multitouch pad for easier overall navigating throughout the console, do some numbers / text inputting and use pinch-to-zoom capabilities while using the maps application. Speaking of which, BMW is also introducing "3D City Models," this will essentially give folks behind the wheel a "realistic depiction" of streets and buildings around their location area -- however, it's worth mentioning these tidbits will only be useful in "select locations." What's more, BMW's said the new enhancements are getting a speed boost thanks to LTE integration, but that'll have to wait until November of this year. If you're interested in learning more, feel free to give the PR below a quick read.

Suit blames Ala. coach Saban's daughter for fight

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) ? The daughter of University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban is being sued by a sorority sister who claims the two got into a fight over a Facebook post after a night of drinking.

The lawsuit was filed late last month in Tuscaloosa by Sarah Grimes, who is identified as a sorority sister of Kristen Saban. Grimes suffered numerous injuries in a hair-pulling, throat-grabbing melee that an emergency room doctor said could have killed her, the suit claims.

The complaint seeks an unspecified amount of at least $10,000 and doesn't mention the football coach or his wife Terry Saban. A representative of the coach declined comment.

An attorney for Kristen Saban filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit on Thursday, blaming the altercation on Grimes and claiming the coach's daughter acted only in self-defense. Kristen Saban's motion said she didn't cause any of Grimes' injuries.

"We strongly dispute the allegations ? and that's all they are at this point ? made in the complaint," said Josh Hayes, an attorney for Kristen Saban. "We will vigorously defend Kristen and the truth will come out."

A lawyer for Grimes, Stephen Strickland, called the lawsuit "a private matter."

"It's not about Nick Saban, it's not about Miss Terry. It's about two individuals who used to be sorority sisters and friends," Strickland said. Both are still students at the university.

The lawsuit claimed Grimes and Kristen Saban were playing a drinking game called "Power Hour" with friends on Aug. 28, 2010. After an hour, around midnight, they went to a Tuscaloosa bar called Rounders where Kristen Saban got mad because a guy she had dated wasn't paying her enough attention, according to the suit.

The group went to a house after last call at the bar and Kristen Saban became emotional, the suit said. While lying on the floor with two other young women the coach's daughter began saying "how everyone did not understand 'how it was' for her ... ," the complaint said.

"After Kristen refused to get off the floor after several people had tried to help her, Sarah looked over at Kristen and said, 'Kristen, please just shut up. We're all sick and tired of hearing it,'" according to the suit

Later, Kristen Saban posted to Facebook: "No one likes Sarah! Yayyyyy!" Confronted by Grimes, Kristen Saban deleted the post, the suit said.

Grimes claims the altercation began when she told Kristen Saban: "That's fine, but we're done, you're crazy." Grimes contends the other woman punched her repeatedly in the head, grabbed her neck and pulled her hair, leaving her bloody, swollen and bruised.

Friends took Grimes to the emergency room at DCH Regional Medical Center, which is adjacent to the university campus. There, both city and university police and the university's dean of students showed up in response to an assault call, the suit said.

University spokeswoman Cathy Andreen said a worker from the school's student affairs office, not the dean, went to the hospital after being notified by university police. Such checks are standard when a student is hospitalized, she said.

Andreen declined further comment, citing privacy rules.

Tuscaloosa police Sgt. Brent Blankley said officers went to the hospital and filled out a report. "The victim stated she did not want to prosecute in the case and the case was closed," he said, declining further comment.

The suit said Grimes was hurt so badly she suffered a concussion, an increase in migraine headaches, had nasal surgery and required psychological help.

"As a result of the beating and the head injuries Sarah Grimes sustained by Kristen Saban, Sarah has had repeated night terrors, anxiety, physical trembling, fears of dying from brain injuries, trouble sleeping, and intrusive recollections of the event," the lawsuit said.

Kristen Saban's lawyer argued that Grimes was responsible for her own injuries. The dismissal motion also said insurance covered Grimes' medical costs, so Kristen Saban shouldn't have to pay.

Kristen Saban pleaded guilty to an unspecified offense before the university's judicial board but was not prosecuted criminally, according to the suit. It said she was required to undergo psychological screening and take an anger management class.

A 2009 news release from the university about sorority recruitment identified both Grimes, of Pensacola, Fla., and Kristen Saban as new members of Phi Mu.

Cablevision Optimum apps for iPad, iPhone upgraded with a new UI, ratings and discovery features

Cablevision unveiled its Optimum for iPad app with live TV streaming in the spring of 2011, then upgraded it to 2.0 with remote control and DVR scheduling plus an iPhone-compatible edition last fall, and now 3.0 has arrived on iOS with a whole new UI. The updated look makes the app more consistent with the web-based Optimum experience for PCs that launched in April, making it easier to find shows and view the guide well into the future as well as up to two hours into the past. Key to the upgraded discovery experience is the ability to rate TV shows which it uses to make recommendations on other content. The DVR section has even been revamped, making it easier to see what's been recorded and programs that are scheduled, as well as remaining storage space. The full changelog is available on iTunes, subscribers can grab the free apps for their respective devices at the links below.

Garmin's Fenix GPS watch is rough and ready ??for a price

9 hrs.

Veteran GPS maker Garmin released a new GPS watch Tuesday aimed at outdoors enthusiasts: The Fenix is ruggedized and made with off-the-path trekking in mind. At $400, you won't find it in the bargain bin, but serious hikers may decide that it's worth the extra?cash.

The new watch has a similar design to the company's previous Forerunner watches: a round LCD face with buttons around the edge. There's no touch-enabled surface like its most expensive predecessors, probably because it wasn't compatible with the scratch-resistant face and waterproofing. It'll go down to 160 feet under and should shrug off the occasional tumble or errant branch.

The interface has a new mode that places you on a graphical representation of your path, which you can set beforehand with waypoints or create as you go with a GPS breadcrumb trail. That's good news for alpine hikers who may lose track of the trail when they leave it to check out a landmark or view. And of course it has a built-in compass, barometer, and altimeter so you can be sure of your location and bearing.

You'll keep track of your trips and manage paths using Garmin's software, and should be able to beam tracks and waypoints to other Garmin devices or "select smartphones," which they decline to name.

The Fenix should be available this Fall for $400. You can pick one up online or at your favorite outdoor retailer.

Happy birthday, Tom Hanks!

By Rebecca Macatee, E!Online

Tom Hanks has played an astronaut, a women's baseball coach, a prison guard and everything in between. In real life, he's known as a really nice guy.

Matt Sayles / AP

"Thanx for the B'Day wishes.! Born in '56, turning 56. That mean anything?" the actor tweeted Monday. "Not bad looking for 56, eh?" He then linked to a comically distorted WhoSay picture of himself hamming it up for the camera.

Match Making For Boomers: Decoding Online Dating Myths: Steps to ...

The Picture Is the Thing

Your picture is what will get you noticed, send a message about what you're like, and hopefully attract the right type of person to you. It's that last part, attracting the right type of person that is really worth considering.

As you will learn by experience, there are profile spammers; these are people who send winks, icebreakers, or e-mails to just about anyone who are on the service. They play the numbers game, much like the guy in a bar who thinks that if he hits on every woman, statistically he will score with one of them eventually. Just learn how to spot profile spammers. Discounting those types of contacts-people who don't care about how you look or who you are, just as long as you're breathing-how do you attract the right type of inquiry?

Attract His Attention The Right Way

Common sense when choosing or taking a picture of yourself will go a long way toward attracting the right person. For example, you may be a very sexual person. You may be pretty hot, with a great body and model looks. If you use a photo that shows that side of you, who will you get a response from? People who are going to judge you almost entirely on how you look? People who are just looking to get laid?

The way we think of ourselves, and the way we have come to posture ourselves in photographs may not be in harmony with our personalities or our experiences. You can be a very sexy person who takes a smokin' photo, but if you're looking for a serious relationship based on mutual interests, and sex is the last thing on your mind right now, that is the message you need to send.

The One-Second Evaluation

So, I have told you that your photo will most likely have about one second to catch the eyes of most people on the service you use. So take a good look at the pictures you're trying to choose from for your profile, and conduct your own one-second test.

Take your pictures (including those you don't even plan to use) and, if possible, have a friend with you. Next, take some little pieces of paper and write basic categories on the pieces such as happy, sad, funny, serious, romantic, or any other looks you think will attract the type of person you want to date.

Now put the pieces of paper on a table, take a handful of your photos, look at each one for a second, and then throw it into one of the piles. You can do this, or you can have your friend do this.
Once you're finished, whoever did the throwing sits back, and the other person looks at each pile and confirms the impression. You or your friend take the pictures from the happy pile, and make sure that the pictures are indeed happy pictures of you.

The most important part of this exercise is to sort the pictures quickly. You want to go with that "one-second judgment" that is so much a part of making a first impression. This will help you sort out pictures by the message they send rather than how much you like the particular photo.

The one-second exercise will help you not only with existing photographs, but also with the photos you'll take to use for your online profile. Start thinking of your pictures as messages you're sending to the person you're looking for. You can attract the right person if you send the right message.

Judge Yourself the Way You Judge Others

It's hard to be objective, or honestly critical, about yourself. We all have an image of ourselves we've honed over years of having good and bad pictures taken. That self-image may not be the best image for attracting someone. For example, your favorite pictures of yourself may be at the beach when you're looking fantastic in a bathing suit. Even though those photos may be the best pictures of you, a picture of you in a bathing suit may send the wrong message to potential daters.
