BOSTON -- Divers have discovered a World War II-era German submarine nearly 70 years after it sank under withering U.S. attack in waters off Nantucket.

The U-550 was found Monday by a privately funded group organized by New Jersey lawyer Joe Mazraani.

"They?ve looked for it for over 20 years,??Mazraani, a shipwreck diver, told The Boston Globe. ?It?s another World War II mystery solved.?

In?the second trip in two years to the site by the team, the seven-man crew using?side-scan sonar located the wreck listing to its side in deep water about 70 miles south of Nantucket.

Sonar operator Garry Kozak said he spotted the 252-foot submarine during the second of an exhausting two days of searching. Kozak said the team asked him if they'd found it, then erupted in joy without a word from him.

"They could see it with the grin (on my face) and the look in my eyes," Kozak said.

The crew had?searched 100 square miles of ocean, the Globe reported. Traveling at five knots, the ship scanned the vast expanse for signs of the sunken vessel, a tedious process crew members likened to ?mowing the lawn.?

Mazraani dove down to confirm the discovery with pictures, the Globe said.

On April 16, 1944, the U-550 torpedoed the gasoline tanker SS Pan Pennsylvania, which had lagged behind its protective convoy as it set out with 140,000 barrels of gasoline for Great Britain, according to the U.S. Coast Guard website and research by Mazraani.

The U-boat slipped under the doomed tanker to hide. But one of the tanker's three escorts, the USS Joyce, saw it on sonar and severely damaged it by dropping depth charges.

The Germans, forced to surface, manned their deck guns while another escort vessel, the USS Gandy, returned fire and rammed the U-boat. The third escort, the USS Peterson, then hit the U-boat with two more depth charges. The crew abandoned the submarine, but not before setting off explosions to scuttle it. The submarine hadn't been seen again until Monday.

The U-550 is one of several World War II-era German U-boats that have been discovered off the U.S. coast, but it's the only one that sank in that area, Mazraani said. He said it's been tough to find largely because military positioning of the battle was imprecise, and searchers had only a general idea where the submarine was when it sank. Kozak noted that the site is far offshore and has only limited windows of good weather.

The other team members were Steve Gatto, Tom Packer, Brad Sheard, Eric Takakjian and Anthony Tedsechi

Mazraani is cagey about the vessel's precise location, saying only that it's in deep water. Mazraani's said his best estimate was that the team spent thousands of dollars of its own money on the expedition. He joked that no one on the team, whose members range in age from the mid-20s to mid-50s, stands to make money from the find unless someone writes a book.

Mazraani said the next step is to contact any sailors or their families from the escort vessels, the tanker and the German U-boat to share the news and show the pictures. Another trip to the site is coming, he said, adding the investigation has just started.

"The history behind it all is really what drives us," Mazraani said.

NASA's First New Spacesuit In 20 Years Is Its Own Airlock

As much as I value the space program, I am questioning the need for designing a new space suit.

Congress constantly targets NASA for budget cuts...

With its limited budget NASA seems more interesting in robotic flights instead of manned flights. They seem to be using more things like the Mars Rover.

We do not even have a space fleet right now. The shuttles have been mothballed and sold off as museum pieces and we now send people to the space station by buying them passage on soviet vessels launched out of Kazakhstan.

The future of manned space flight seems to be private industry in the US. How come NASA is spending the money designing suits instead of the future space companies?

Lower vitamin D could increase risk of dying, especially for frail, older adults

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? A new study concludes that among older adults -- especially those who are frail -- low levels of vitamin D can mean a much greater risk of death.

The randomized, nationally representative study found that older adults with low vitamin D levels had a 30 percent greater risk of death than people who had higher levels.

Overall, people who were frail had more than double the risk of death than those who were not frail. Frail adults with low levels of vitamin D tripled their risk of death over people who were not frail and who had higher levels of vitamin D.

"What this really means is that it is important to assess vitamin D levels in older adults, and especially among people who are frail," said lead author Ellen Smit of Oregon State University.

Smit said past studies have separately associated frailty and low vitamin D with a greater mortality risk, but this is the first to look at the combined effect. This study, published online in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, examined more than 4,300 adults older than 60 using data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

"Older adults need to be screened for vitamin D," said Smit, who is a nutritional epidemiologist at OSU's College of Public Health and Human Sciences. Her research is focused on diet, metabolism, and physical activity in relation to both chronic disease and HIV infection.

"As you age, there is an increased risk of melanoma, but older adults should try and get more activity in the sunshine," she said. "Our study suggests that there is an opportunity for intervention with those who are in the pre-frail group, but could live longer, more independent lives if they get proper nutrition and exercise."

Frailty is when a person experiences a decrease in physical functioning characterized by at least three of the following five criteria: muscle weakness, slow walking, exhaustion, low physical activity, and unintentional weight loss. People are considered "pre-frail" when they have one or two of the five criteria.

Because of the cross-sectional nature of the survey, researchers could not determine if low vitamin D contributed to frailty, or whether frail people became vitamin D deficient because of health problems. However, Smit said the longitudinal analysis on death showed it may not matter which came first.

"If you have both, it may not really matter which came first because you are worse off and at greater risk of dying than other older people who are frail and who don't have low vitamin D," she said. "This is an important finding because we already know there is a biological basis for this. Vitamin D impacts muscle function and bones, so it makes sense that it plays a big role in frailty."

The study divided people into four groups. The low group had levels less than 50 nanograms per milliliter; the highest group had vitamin D of 84 or higher. In general, those who had lower vitamin D levels were more likely to be frail.

About 70 percent of Americans, and up to a billion people worldwide, have insufficient levels of vitamin D. And during the winter months in northern climates, it can be difficult to get enough just from the sun. OSU's Linus Pauling Institute recommends adults take 2,000 IU of supplemental vitamin D daily. The current federal guidelines are 600 IU for most adults, and 800 for those older than 70.

"We want the older population to be able to live as independent for as long as possible, and those who are frail have a number of health problems as they age," Smit said. "A balanced diet including good sources of vitamin D like milk and fish, and being physically active outdoors, will go a long way in helping older adults to stay independent and healthy for longer."

Mars orbiter repositioned to phone home Mars landing

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft has successfully adjusted its orbital location to be in a better position to provide prompt confirmation of the August landing of the Curiosity rover.

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft carrying Curiosity can send limited information directly to Earth as it enters Mars' atmosphere. Before the landing, Earth will set below the Martian horizon from the descending spacecraft's perspective, ending that direct route of communication. Odyssey will help to speed up the indirect communication process.

NASA reported during a July 16 news conference that Odyssey, which originally was planned to provide a near-real-time communication link with Curiosity, had entered safe mode July 11. This situation would have affected communication operations, but not the rover's landing. Without a repositioning maneuver, Odyssey would have arrived over the landing area about two minutes after Curiosity landed.

A spacecraft thruster burn Tuesday, July 24, lasting about six seconds has nudged Odyssey about six minutes ahead in its orbit. Odyssey is now operating normally, and confirmation of Curiosity's landing is expected to reach Earth at about 10:31 p.m. PDT on Aug. 5 (early Aug. 6, EDT and Universal Time), as originally planned.

"Information we are receiving indicates the maneuver has completed as planned," said Mars Odyssey Project Manager Gaylon McSmith of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "Odyssey has been working at Mars longer than any other spacecraft, so it is appropriate that it has a special role in supporting the newest arrival."

Two other Mars orbiters, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and the European Space Agency's Mars Express, also will be in position to receive radio transmissions from the Mars Science Laboratory during its descent. However, they will be recording information for later playback, not relaying it immediately, as only Odyssey can.

Odyssey arrived at Mars in 2001. Besides conducting its own scientific observations, it has served as a communication relay for NASA's Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers and the Phoenix lander on the Martian surface. NASA plans to use Odyssey and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter as communication relays for Curiosity during that rover's two-year prime mission on Mars.

Odyssey and the Mars Science Laboratory, with its Curiosity rover, are managed for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington by JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Curiosity was built at JPL.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver built Odyssey. JPL and Lockheed Martin collaborate on operating Odyssey.

4 Keys for Effectively Utilizing Cloud-based BPM | Business Process ...

4 Keys for Effectively Utilizing Cloud-based BPM

July 26th, 2012

Shariq Ata (@shariq)

As more and more businesses move processes to the Cloud, SaaS (read CRM, ERP, Billing, etc) is fast becoming a commodity service. Today, businesses are increasingly looking at ?BPM in the Cloud? as a vehicle to distinguish themselves in the global competitive market. While organizations view SaaS as a quick and less capital intensive way to access and store data, they also want to harmoniously orchestrate and monitor their Business Processes across SaaS (Cloud) and home grown (on-premise) solutions.

In the crowded world of Cloud-based BPM, many vendors claim to deliver simplicity, ease of process automation and cost efficiency. But a close look under the marketing veneer reveals that many vendors are just reinventing and relabeling the same old as new. Therefore, it is important to understand the key attributes of any robust enterprise-class BPM offerings in the Cloud that gives you true competitive advantage.
Here is a quick checklist worth pondering before you embark on your next enterprise BPM project in the Cloud.

  1. BPM alone is not enough, a comprehensive platform is needed and it includes:
    1. SOA -based integration bus to rapidly integrate disparate systems in the cloud and on-premise through rich set of connectors
    2. Business Rules Engine to support dynamic business rules as a web service that can either be invoked as standalone or embedded? into a business process
    3. Mashup composer to quickly create a single view of customer, product, order across multiple distributed backend systems
    4. Business Activity Monitoring capability to monitor both operational and business related SLAs, KPIs, etc
    5. Multi-browser support for both the end user and the developer. In other words, a true browser-based IDE where a geographically distributed team can collaborate to model, deploy and monitor the processes
    6. Multi-tenancy as a part of its? architectural DNA to securely segregate the business process, data, business rules and key organizational specific artifacts
    7. A Cloud-based business service enablement and provisioning
  2. Best-of-breed is no longer an option in the brave new world of cloud:
The need of the hour is a homogenously integrated stack where each component is fully integrated to build an end-to-end solution. In the Cloud world, summoning SMEs from various stacks in a room to pin-point the problem in the production system is no longer an option.
  3. The solution must adhere to the industry standards:
Cloud is all about seamless interaction between many systems and technology therefore it has to adhere to the industry standards.
  4. Ability to take advantage of the cloud elasticity :
This can be achieved by automatically adding new BPM nodes when certain CPU/memory thresholds are reached.

Remember, not all BPM Vendors are created equal.? Adhering to these four guidelines will help ensure that you select a vendor that offers a comprehensive, simple and robust platform that supports business agility and gives you a clear competitive advantage.

my great challenge: Crockpot Vegetarian Chili

This week, something great happened! Scott finally gave away his secret vegetarian chili recipe, and now it is your turn to savour the flavour!

The least you need to know:

  • This is a vegetarian Chili
  • This is a crock-pot recipe
  • This recipe is kids friendly (if my boys eat it, trust me, it's kids friendly!)
  • This recipe is so easy you won't believe how great it taste!
  • And speaking of great tasting, this is such a good chili, it requires no meat!

Preparation time: under 20 minutes ------------------Cooking time: 3 hours.

Ingredients:

Crockpot + blender

2 cans of black beans

2 cans of kidney beans

2 cans of tomato sauce

1 can of crushed tomatoes

1 can of chick peas

1 can of golden corn

1medium size onion

1 medium size green bell pepper

3 stalks of celery

Red pepper flakes

Ground Jamaican All Spice

Ground Cumin

Ground Chili Pepper

Ground Chippotle Pepper

Sea salt

Black peppercorn

Serving sides

Sharp shredded Cheddar cheese

Low fat Sour Cream

Tortilla chips of your choice

Rice of your choosing

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Wait a minute! What's up with all the spices? Scott adds them to taste, I can't really tell you how much he adds, but I trust that you know what your family can handle. We make a mild chili in our home.

Step One:

Wash and chop your onion, green pepper and celery into large chunks.

Place all three into the blender and pulse to the consistency of a thick soup.

Pour the contents inside the crockpot.

?

?

There is a reason why we blend the onion, pepper and celery together: KIDS! If it's green or healthy, it's just yucky! So we figured out a sneaky way to hide the good stuff without them realizing it. There is a bonus to that though, blending them in the mixer actually releases more of the vegetables' flavour!

Step Two:

Once you have your veggies inside the crockpot, begin adding the other ingredients, one at a time.

Add the 2 cans of tomato sauce...

Add your spices - remember this is added to taste and you know your tolerance level for Chili pepper better than we do...

Add the crushed tomatoes and give it a good stir...

Scott finds that if he stirs the ingredients at this stage rather than later, there is a more even distribution of spices.

Step Three:

Begin adding all your other (solid) ingredients. Rinse all under cold water, one at a time before adding to the crockpot...

Here are the Kidney Beans...

Corn and Chick Peas...

Give it a good stir to mix the chili evenly before cooking...

Step Four:

Set your crockpot on HIGH and cook for 3 HOURS.

We use aluminum foil to cover the crockpot under the lid?and ensure a tighter seal. By the way, and on a side note, please disregard the obvious lack of handle/knob, it broke off years ago. Also, I am pretty sure there are better crockpots than this one. I never found this actual "crockpot" pot to be all that great, if it was not for the foil as a cover, steam would escape from this thing at a rapid rate and the food would always be dry...I do not recommend this specific model.

Once your chili is cooked, you may want to taste and spice again according to your liking.
We serve ours on a bowl of rice (we mix brown and white), topped with shredded Cheddar cheese and a Tbsp of low fat sour cream.

Enjoy!

Thank you for sharing this post and "liking" My Great Challenge on Facebook!

EPDM Give Outstanding Surface Wetting Properties

EPDM sheeting is often used as a liner for back yard water ponds and other man-made water features.

Tweet This Roofs are possibly the most important part of a home and often the most ignored one. In addition, the most important job that it plays is of providing protection to the building and its residents. But at the same time it is the most neglected area of the house because as heard often "out of sight-out of mind", the roof is also generally out of sight. One would not want to go over the roof and examine it for no reason. That's why, until and unless it starts leaking, no one pays any attention to the roof or its maintenance.

EPDM rubber is a very flexible and long-lasting material that has a huge range of different purposes and applications. EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene M, in which the M refers to a class of rubbers that contain a saturated chain of the polymethylene type. What that means in simple terms is that EPDM rubber has fantastic heat, ozone, and weather resistance. It is also a great electrical insulator.

EPDM sheeting is often used as a liner for back yard water ponds and other man-made water features. The rubber does not leach chemicals, and so would not harm any fish living in these ponds. EPDM roofing material is one of the most common applications of this rubber product, although it can be used in garden hoses, washers, belts, electrical insulation, seals and speaker cone surrounds.

EPDM rubber is also often the main substance used in the weather seals of vehicles, such as door seals, window seals, and hood seals. This is due to the great weatherproof properties of this type of rubber.

Roof is the greatest source of protection from any type of whether condition for the world. But they have to spend more for its repairing and remodeling almost every year especially after rainy and summer season. Roof Leaks are mainly the cause of improper installation and ineffective flashing of roofs at the time of its construction. Roof Leak may occur about any place of the roof buy they found more near the chimney, step, apron, pipes, and points at which two roofs meets. Roof leaks may also occur when your roof shingles installed improperly. If you ignore it for a long time, then they may become a cause of major damage for of the roof.

It is important to ensure that your roof is equipped with building materials that are appropriate to the weather conditions of the area that you live in. Choosing cheap, low-quality materials that do not handle well in certain weather conditions can prove to be a very expensive mistake. This type of mistake especially at the time of construction leads to bear heavy cost of repairing near about each year or in every season. You can minimize the problem by selecting the material that is more suitable and having great resistance for all type of weather condition like EPDM and liquid rubber designed especially for it. Elastomeric roof coatings and liquid rubber are also designed for roof leak due to draining water in rain; provide great resistance for water in rainy season. Similarly epdm is the best product for summer sun that can easily control the temperature by providing complete protection to the roof from sunlight.
