STUDENTS across the Toowoomba and Western Downs regions have been busy fine-tuning their filmmaking skills for the annual Origin8 Fast Film Festival.

STUDENTS across the Toowoomba and Western Downs regions have been busy fine-tuning their filmmaking skills in preparation for the annual Origin8 Fast Film Festival.? ?

In its fourth year, Origin8 Fast Film Festival is a 24-hour filmmaking competition open to entrants of all ages.? ?

To ensure participants are set to take up the filmmaking challenge, the Empire Theatre has been offering in-school workshops for potential entrants.? ?

Brisbane-based filmmaker Josh Long, who has a passion for grassroots, no budget filmmaking, has been introducing students across the region to fun, low stress and low budget filmmaking.? ?

Empire Theatre Projects Manager Jeanette Wedmaier said Josh's workshops offered potential participants the knowledge and skills they needed to create a film in a very small window of time.?

? "The workshops aim to inspire students to look at filmmaking differently and to encourage them to think outside the box to overcome any unexpected obstacles," she said.? ?

"We are expecting a number of school groups to participate in the festival this year, so these workshops have given them a small taste of what they can expect."? ?

Students at Toowoomba State High School Mt Lofty Campus, Our Lady of the Southern Cross Dalby, Downlands College and Lockyer Valley and Crow's Nest State Schools will participate in the workshops.? ?

In addition to the $3,000 prize for best fast film, there will be a $500 prize for best Under 18 team plus more cash and prizes.? ?

Teams of up to eight people can register for the festival held over the weekend of August 17 to 19. ?

Outback parent co. stock blooms after IPO

(AP) ? Shares of Bloomin' Brands, which operates Outback Steakhouse and other restaurant chains, are proving a tasty treat for investors, though only after the portion size was reduced.

Shares rose $1.42, or 12.9 percent to $12.42 by midday Wednesday in the stock's first trading day on the Nasdaq.

The positive reaction from investors is a good sign for other IPOs expected this week. But it comes only after the company reduced its offering price and cut the number of shares that selling shareholders were offering, a sign that companies should keep expectations muted about how much cash they'll reap by going public.

"It was really downsized in both size and price so it would be an easily digestible offering for individual investors," said Sam Hamadeh, CEO of PrivCo, a research firm that follows privately held companies.

Bloomin' Brands IPO was the biggest market debut since Facebook's disappointing entry in May chilled the market. Other companies scheduled to go public later this week include Carl's Jr. owner CKE Inc. and British soccer club Manchester United. The timing of the IPOs coincides with the final week before many on Wall Street go on break until after Labor Day. Because of that, most IPOs this week are tailored to the individual, rather than institutional, investor.

Late Tuesday, the Tampa, Fla.-based Bloomin' Brands priced its initial public offering of 16 million shares at $11 per share, below the $13 to $15 per share expected, for gross proceeds of $176 million. Other selling stockholders offered 3 million additional shares. And underwriters have a 30-day option to buy up to an additional 2.4 million shares, half from Bloomin' Brands and half from selling shareholders. Originally, Bloomin' Brands and selling shareholders each planned to sell 10.7 million shares, for a total of about 21 million.

The company said it plans to use proceeds to pay down debt and for working capital and general corporate purposes.

Bloomin' Brands' other chains include Carrabba's Italian Grill and Bonefish Grill. It operates more than 1,400 restaurants in 48 states and 20 countries. Its name comes from a signature dish at Outback Steakhouse, an onion carved to resemble a flower that is then deep fried.

The stock is trading under the ticker "BLMN" on the Nasdaq Global Select Market.

The company, which used to be called OSI Restaurant Partners, was public until 2007, when private equity firms Bain Capital Partners and Catterton Management Co. bought it for $41.15 a share in cash in a deal worth $3.24 billion. The trading price at midday Wednesday gives Bloomin' a market capitalization of about $1.5 billion.

The positive results for Bloomin' Brands could bode well for CKE Inc., which begins trading on Friday. The owner of fast-food chains Carl's Jr. and Hardee's first went public in 1981. In 2010, private-equity firm Apollo Management bought it and took it private.

CKE has said it expects to price its offering at $14 and $16 each and hopes to raise an estimated $100 million.

This time around it plans to list under the ticker "CK" on the New York Stock Exchange.

The offerings cap a summer IPO season that got off to a slow start because of the fallout from Facebook's disappointing market debut.

Facebook shares began trading publicly on May 18 at the top of their projected IPO range, but ended up closing barely above their IPO price at $38.23 and have fallen sharply since then. They were trading at $20.91 Wednesday morning, down 45 percent from their IPO price.

(AP) ? NASA's latest adventure to Mars has given the world more than just glimpses of a new alien landscape.

It opened a window into the trip itself, from video footage of the landing to a photo of the rover hanging by a parachute to a shot of discarded spacecraft hardware strewn across the surface. And the best views ? of Mars and the journey there ? are yet to come.

"Spectacular," mission deputy project scientist Joy Crisp said of the footage. "We've not had that before."

Since parking itself inside an ancient crater Sunday night, the Curiosity rover has delighted scientists with views of its new surroundings, including the 3-mile-high mountain it will drive to. It beamed back the first color picture Tuesday revealing a tan-hued, pebbly landscape and the crater rim off in the distance.

Locale aside, Curiosity is giving scientists an unprecedented sense of what it took to reach its Martian destination. The roving laboratory sent back nearly 300 thumbnails that NASA processed into a low-quality video showing the last 2 1/2 minutes of its white-knuckle dive through the thin Martian atmosphere.

In the video, the protective heat shield pops off and tumbles away. The footage gets jumpy as Curiosity rides on a parachute. In the last scene, dust billows up just before landing.

NASA twice tried to record a Mars landing. In 1999, the Mars Polar Lander carried similar gear, but it slammed into the south pole after prematurely shutting off its engines. Another effort was aborted in 2008 during the Phoenix lander's mission to the northern plains when mission managers decided not to turn it on for fear it would interfere with the landing.

"It's too emotional for me," said Ken Edgett of the Malin Space Science Systems, which operates the video camera. "It's been a long journey and it's really awesome."

The full high-resolution video will be downloaded when time allows and should give the first peek of a landing on another planet.

Curiosity's journey to Mars spanned eight months and 352 million miles. The rover gently touched down Sunday night after executing an elaborate and untested landing routine. The size of a compact car, it was too heavy to land using air bags. Instead, it relied on a heat shield, parachute, rockets and cables to lower it to the ground.

During its seven-minute plunge through the atmosphere, Curiosity shed the spacecraft parts. On Tuesday, scientists got their first view of the castoffs. The eagle-eyed Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter had circled over the landing site and spotted Curiosity and the scattered parts.

"It's like a crime scene photo," said Sarah Milkovich, a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientist.

The parachute appeared to be inflated, and the rocket stage that unspooled the cables crashed 2,100 feet from the landing site.

Earlier this week, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter caught Curiosity sailing through the Martian skies under a parachute. It was only the second time a spacecraft has been photographed on a parachute; the first was Phoenix during its descent to the surface.

The nuclear-powered, six-wheel Curiosity will spend the next two years chiseling into rocks and scooping up soil at Gale Crater to determine whether the environment ever had the right conditions for microbes to thrive. It will spend a chunk of its time driving to Mount Sharp where images from space reveal signs of past water on the lower flanks.

It'll be several weeks before it takes its first drive and flexes its robotic arm. Since landing, engineers have been busy performing health checkups on its systems and instruments. Over the next several days, it was poised to send back crisper pictures of its surroundings including a panorama.

The rover was "still in great shape," mission manager Michael Watkins said.

The work is reported in an online science journal Nature Communications on August 7, by an international collaboration team of Dr. Shigeki Onoda (Condensed Matter Theory Lab., RIKEN Advanced Science Institute), Dr. Lieh-Jeng Chang (Quantum Beam Science Dictorate, Japan Atomic Energy Agency and Dept. of Physics, National Cheng Kung Univ.), and Dr. Yixi Su (J?lich Center for Neutron Science JCNS-FRM II, Forschungszentrum J?lich), and coworkers.

Electrons rotate like the earth, acting as tiny magnets called spins in magnetic materials. Usually, these spins form a magnetic order on cooling, and the monopoles, namely, north and south poles of electron spins, are confined to each other. In magnetic materials called spin ice?3, the spins remain unordered even at low temperatures, and the monopoles behave as if they are fractionalized while unstable. Since 2010, on the other hand, Dr. Onoda and coworkers have predicted a so-called quantum spin ice?4 that can exhibit a magnetic order realized by a Bose-Einstein condensation of monopoles. In this case, a coupling to fictitious electromagnetic fields, called gauge fields, endows a mass for otherwise gapless spin excitations in the ordered state, forming an analogous superconducting state of monopoles via the Higgs mechanism?5. Now, cooling a quantum spin ice material Yb2Ti2O7 to 0.21 K, the team observed a transition from a state with fractionalized unstable monopoles to a ferromagnetic state with condensed stable monopoles, indicating a Higgs transition of monopoles. This state hosting dissipationless monopole current of spins is expected to play important roles in spintronics that aims at efficient controls of magnets for application.

Background

In most of electrically insulating magnets, electrons form tiny magnets called spins by their rotation. A macroscopic number of spins usually show an order at low temperatures, demonstrating a spontaneous symmetry breaking. For instance, in ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, spins show parallel and antiparallel alignments, respectively. However, a geometrical frustration, which will be explained below, sometimes suppresses a formation of the magnetic order, as in materials called spin ice, Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7.

Spins in spin ice are localized at points of a pyrochlore lattice which has a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Each spin can point only to the "in" or "out" towards the center of the tetrahedron. Two adjacent spins interact with each other so that they form a pair of "in" and "out." However, it is impossible that all the pairs of adjacent spins on a tetrahedron take such pair of "in" and "out". Because of this frustration, the four spins on each tetrahedron are compromised to form a "2-in, 2-out" structure, as the most stable one. This is called the ice rule. Yet a huge number of spin configurations satisfy the ice rule over the crystal, preventing a spin ordering even at low temperatures. Inverting a single spin in the ice-rule state creates a pair of unstable "3-in, 1-out" and "1-in, 3-out" tetrahedra hosting a north pole and a south pole of spins at the center, respectively. These north/south poles are recognized as monopoles fractionalized from electron spins, whereas they are unstable and disappear eventually.

In 2010-2012, Dr. Onoda and coworkers derived a theoretical model called "quantum spin ice" for magnetic materials like Pr2Zr2O7 and Yb2Ti2O7, where monopoles exhibit a motion obeying the quantum mechanics. It has been shown that in certain cases, monopoles undergo a Bose-Einstein condensation leading to a magnetic order where each spin points to a direction largely tilted from the "in" or "out." Now the collaboration team, cooling a quantum spin ice magnet Yb2Ti2O7, challenged an observation of a transition, from the state with fractionalized but unstable monopoles, to the other having condensed monopoles.

Research method and results

The research team irradiated a neutron beam on the single crystal of Yb2Ti2O7 with the neutron spins being aligned, and then analyzed configurations of electron spins from a pattern of the scattering intensity of neutrons by electron spins. First, the correlation among electron spins was measured at the absolute temperature 0.3 K. The result remarkably agrees with a theoretical calculation based on the quantum spin ice model. It reveals such a ridge structure that the scattering intensity strongly depends on the scattering direction, unlike a peak structure to be observed around a transition temperature in conventional magnets. This indicates that monopoles become fractionalized from electron spins slightly above the transition temperature in Yb2Ti2O7. Below 0.21 K, a typical scattering pattern indicating a magnetic ordering and a total loss of the polarization of the neutron spins were observed, confirming that the material becomes ferromagnetic. It was also found that at 0.03 K, much lower than the transition temperature, ordered spins pointed to directions that were largely rotated from the "in" or "out" allowed for spin ice. This structure of spin ordering coincides with the theoretical calculation on the same quantum spin ice model at absolute zero temperature. These observations point to a transition due to the quantum-mechanics acting on monopoles, from a magnetic Coulomb liquid where monopoles interact with each other through a Coulomb force analogous to the electric Coulomb force, to a ferromagnetic Higgs phase where the monopoles are condensed.

Future developments

The superconductivity showing zero electric resistivity is used for application. The ferromagnetism in quantum spin ice reported here is expected to provide the spintronics, aiming at efficient controls of the magnetism for device applications, with a new state that can carry monopole current of spins without loss. Quantum spin ice materials, if the Higgs transition temperature is increased to a room temperature, may open a revolutionary industrial engineering.

?4?Quantum spin ice

In spin ice, each electron spin is only allowed to point to the center of either of two tetrahedra to which the vertex point of the spin belongs, namely, the spin can take either of two states "in" and "out." On the other hand, when spins can point to any other directions rotated from "in" and "out," it turns on additional interactions which can flip the two states of neighboring spins, because of the quantum-mechanics. Such system is called quantum spin ice.

The probability of finding particles obeying the quantum mechanics fluctuates in space and time, as in the case of waves or fields. Fermi and Bose particles are typical quantum-mechanical particles, on which the exclusion principle acts and does not, respectively. S. Africa's Rudolph, Smith solid in England Test

South African opening batsmen Jacques Rudolph and Graeme Smith batted soundly on a rain-hit fifth and final day of the second Test against England at Headingley on Monday.

South Africa were 123 for one at lunch, a lead of 117. Play was twice interrupted by rain and only 21 overs were bowled despite lunch being delayed by half an hour.

England's only success came when part-time off-spinner Kevin Pietersen trapped Rudolph leg before wicket with his second delivery in the last over before lunch - the second time in the match Pietersen had dismissed Rudolph with his second ball.

By then, though, Rudolph and Smith (50 not out) had virtually ensured that the match would end in a draw. South Africa lead the three-match series 1-0 and England will need to win the final Test starting at Lord's on August 16 to avoid the tourists usurping their number one ranking in Test cricket.

Although both James Anderson and Stuart Broad produced some hostile deliveries on an overcast morning, Rudolph played some stylish strokes, while captain Smith was solid, reaching his half-century off 103 balls off the last delivery before lunch.

Rudolph, returning to what was his home ground during five years playing for English county Yorkshire, drove fluently to reach his half-century off 92 balls with nine fours.

He also had an all-run four and added another three boundaries in facing another 30 deliveries before his dismissal.

Rudolph was opening the batting in place of Alviro Petersen, who suffered a hamstring injury while making top score of 182 in the first innings.

Holmes' psychiatrist contacted university police before shooting

The psychiatrist who treated suspected movie-theater shooter James Holmes made contact with a University of Colorado police officer to express concerns about her patient's behavior several weeks before Holmes' alleged rampage, sources told ABC News.

The sources did not know what the officer approached by Dr. Lynne Fenton did with the information she passed along. They said, however, that the officer was recently interviewed, with an attorney present, by the Aurora Police Department as a part of the ongoing investigation of the shooting.

Fenton would have had to have serious concerns to break confidentiality with her patient to reach out to the police officer or others, the sources said. Under Colorado law, a psychiatrist can legally breach a pledge of confidentiality with a patient if he or she becomes aware of a serious and imminent threat that their patient might cause harm to others. Psychiatrists can also breach confidentiality if a court has ordered them to do so.

"For any physician to break doctor-patient confidentiality there would have to be an extremely good reason," said Dr. Carol Bernstein, Dr. Carol Bernstein, a psychiatrist at NYU Langone Medical Center and past president of the American Psychiatric Association.

Bernstein has no specific knowledge of the Holmes case and spoke in general terms.

"Confidentiality is a key part of the doctor-patient relationship," she said. "It is central to everything we do."

ABC news and affiliate KMGH-TV in Denver first reported Wednesday that Fenton had contacted other members of the university's threat-assessment team about her concerns. The university-wide, threat-assessment team reportedly never met to discuss Holmes after he announced his intent to withdraw from the University nearly six weeks before the July 20 shooting that left 12 dead and 58 injured.

University of Colorado spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery declined to comment on what, if anything, the university police officer might have done with information provided by Fenton, citing a court-issued gag order preventing her from confirming or denying any information related to Fenton or the investigation.

In a written statement to ABC News, however, the university said campus police officers are "frequently involved" in meetings of the university's Behavioral Evaluation and Threat Assessment (BETA) team.

The statement went on to say that police involvement with threat assessment "could include security matters, badge access, background checks, wellness checks, criminal investigations and referrals and outreach to other law enforcement agencies."

An attorney for Fenton declined to comment.
